the problem with having a small dog and small children is that the children tend to be a little rough with the dog because it is small enough for them to pick it up and carry it around. i would suggest going with a medium sized dog.

First off whether you get a Chihuahua or a yorkie you HAVE to be in control of both the kids and the dog. Both breeds CAN be nippy.

However, I raise chihuahuas and my kids are now 10 and 12, we have had chis for 10 years. My neighbor took two of my puppies last year and she has kids (2, 8, 12,15,17). She has no problems with the kids and the chis. They love their dogs and the dogs love the family. My friend took another and she has grandkids and has never had a problem with her chi. My chihuahuas are raised around kids and with proper supervision, the kids and chis get along fine. 2 of mine sleep with the kids at night.

My BIL has a yorkie and yorkie mixes. He has a 2 year old and a baby. While I don't think they get along with the kids quite as well as the chis, I'm not there all the time to tell you that. Let's put it this way, he hasn't had a major problem either that would prompt his getting rid of the dogs.

The most important thing to know is that unless you teach the puppy not to bite and the child not to hurt the dog, then you will be in for trouble. A 6 year old is getting to a point that they should be able to understand, Look for a breeder who has kids or has the puppies around kids. These puppies will come to you already knowing that kids are okay, then the rest is up to you. I have never had to deny someone a puppy because they have kids and so far, I have never had a puppy hurt by kids. I love the breed and they are very unique dogs. A few of them are one people dogs (like my small female) others are family dogs. I think as long as you are responsible that either breed is fine (remember how much grooming each breed needs though and fit that into you schedule, yorkies need a lot of grooming and short hair chis need very little).

I have had 7 chi's and all of them were great with kids. Like any dog, if you adopt one and it's around babies/children they won't be nippy or yappy like most people think. All my chi's were around 3 - 10 lbs and haven't had to take any one of them to the vet from injuries yet. All my dogs were very friendly, loving and spunky. They always love to sleep with their humans too. I have 3 chi's, 3 cats and and 1 terrior and they play with each other very well. We also live on 3 acres to accomodate all of them in case you're wondering. :) Yorkies are sweet too but never owned one. I will give you the breeder's web sight which is where we just got a new chi last month. It's TXLC@hughes.net and her name is Nadine Nabors. She just had 7 new pups 3 days ago and I'm thinking about getting another one. BTW - she's not a puppy mill and all her pups stay inside her home until they get adopted. She keeps her home very clean like I do as well. She also ships via air plane for an extra fee of course. I prefer females cuz they are much easier to house train. Nadine already has them paper trained before she let's them go which is at 8 weeks old. The one I just got was a done deal and always uses the paper. That's really nice!! Write her a email - she's very good with all communications. I vote for a chihuahua!! Mention my name which is Gayle and she will be especially nice to ya! Good luck!

i dont have either but my friend has a chichua and it is cute and fun but can be mean and it is very yappy, now i have a maltese and they are just like yorkis very cuddly and it is hyperalegenic with means they dont shed. yorkes love to play. so it just depends on what type of dog u want. my oppinion get the yorki because i think the 6 year old would like that better and its nicer

If you want a dog that is wonderful with children and that is a wonderful breed get the havanese:
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/havanese.htm

But if I was choosing between a yorkie and a chihuahua I would have to go with the yorkie. Chihuahuas are much much more delicate> If you got a yorkie dont get the smallest one. Pick one that will be a good size when grown.

We have a chichua and a bull mastif...both love our kids...however the chichua tends to bit when the kids don't quit bothering him...it's his way of saying "you've taken it too far"...he has his signs of when enough is enough...

Yorkies are really good dogs. I had one for about 11 years until he passed. He was very calm, quiet, and good with children. So are shih tzu's, malteses and other small toy breeds.

Let me tell you, I had a Chihuahua and it was not fun!!! He was really hyper, very hard to housebreak, chewed the wall, tore up his crate, cried non-stop. He didn't like anyone else but me. He actually bit the vet for trying to cut his nails! I tried to get him socialized by taking him to dog parks and puppy kindergarten but it was very hard. Eventually I sold him.

Now I have a maltese-poodle and I love him! He watches tv with me. He plays a lot and he's very friendly. He also was pretty easy to housbreak. Loves kids, unless they are rough with him and pull his tail (then he runs from them and gets a little angry). But other than that he's a great dog. I got him from a breeder. He wasn't that expensive. If you would like the number to the breeder just email me (gcrespo14@yahoo.com) She is located in West Dundee, IL.

Yorkies are really skiddish and chiuauas bark and PEE all over.
However a small dog that is great with kids and adults alike is a min. beagle they come in more colors then you can imagine!
And the price tag isn't to bad either most only get 10-12 inches
