Baptism is the idea that God was not smart enough to make us right in the first place.

How likely is that?

Love and blessings Don

Acts 2:1-8 gives the account of the first baptism in the Holy Spirit. The ONLY sign of being baptized in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues. So, any denomination that bashes this practice is not Biblical. Any denomination that "teaches" how to speak or pray in tongues is not Biblical. Tongues is a proof of the Holy Spirit in your life. That does not mean that you have "arrived". It is just a sign. You must still continue in the word, which is Jesus according to John 1, and that is how you become a Christian. It isn't an instant thing. It's a process. Before you can be baptized in the H.S., you must be born again. To do that, you must confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart (soul) that God raised him from the dead and you shall be saved. The Gospel is defined in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. Believe that and God will guide you. Believe means to trust in, rely on, adhere to.

Baptism of the holy spirit (baptism by fire) is receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is the convincing witness that the gospel is true. The Holy Ghost is real and he has testified to me of the truth. The Holy Ghost can be felt without the gift of the Holy Ghost, but it cannot stay with us. The gift of the Holy Ghost makes it possible for us to have the constant companion of the spirit with us (as long as we are worth to have it). If you have your Bible around read 8:12-25. I know this to be true.

I would like for you to notice some things the Bible says about the Holy Spirit baptism. Notice first that it was a promise, and never a command. Secondly, Holy Spirit baptism was something God did; He is the one who did the baptising. The baptism in the great commission (Matt. 28:18-20, Mark 16:16) was a baptism in water and men were commanded to be baptizing. This was accomplished by another man doing the action of baptism.

Holy Spirit baptism – God did it.
Water Baptism – man was commanded to do it.

In Acts 2, both types can be seen. In the first few verses, the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles. In verse 38, there was the baptism that was commanded “in the name of Jesus Christ (by his authority or instructions) for the remission of sins”. When the Holy Spirit came upon them, it was a noticeable event!

We see that salvation, remission of sins, comes at the baptism that is commanded, not at the point of the Holy Spirit baptism. Like the water in Noah’s flood washed away all of the wickedness in the world and delivered Noah and his family to begin a new life in a new (cleansed) world, “baptism doeth also now save us”. The water baptism washes away sin, “through the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:20-21, Acts 22:16)

Also notice that again Holy Spirit baptism was a promise to certain people at a certain time. Acts 1:2-5 says, “Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”
Jesus was speaking to the apostles. It was to the apostles that Holy Spirit baptism was promised. The time was “not many days hence”. This was accomplished in Acts 2.
The apostles, later gave gifts of the holy spirit by the laying on of their hands. (Acts 8:18) The Holy Spirit also fell on the gentiles in Acts 10. These signs were to confirm the word of God because at that time the New Testament had not been yet completed.
Now we can use the scriptures for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) When “that which is perfect” came, then the miracles were to cease. (1 Corinthians 13:8-10) The Bible is called the “perfect law of liberty”. (James 1:25) We no longer have the Holy Spirit baptism described in Acts 1 and 2. We no longer need it because we have the complete Bible now.

Some have said there are now two baptisms; the Holy Spirit baptism and water baptism. Ephesians 4:4-6 says “There is… one baptism” By that time, the promise of Holy Spirit baptism and its purpose had been fulfilled. Just like these verses say there is “one God”, now there is only “one baptism”. The one baptism is water baptism as commanded in Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38, Col. 2:12, Acts 8:36-38, Acts 10:47-48, and Gal. 3:27.

Please consider this carefully!

when you are saved you are sealed with the Holy Spirit and recieve every spiritual blessing according to Ephsesians 1 Jesus breathed on th apostels, His breath ilustrating the HOly SPirit... we should not separate the work of Jesus and the HOly SPirit too much as Jesus pictured it as close as His own breath

this is according to the promised in the prophets that there would be a New Covenant where God would change hearts and put His Spirit in people and give them a heart to fear Himself, specifically saying 'not like' (in some sense) the covenant given to Moses in the Exodus

in the examples in Acts, the whole church receives the Holy Spirit, especially as the gospel goes into new areas, Jerusalem at Pentecost, Samaria and to the Gentiles and yes to the followers of John the Baptists in Ephesians. The Holy Spirit validating that these groups were not part of the redeemed

Nothing about the baptism OF the Holy Spirit.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is when you are saved and you are then [Holy] Spirit-filled through Jesus.

When I was baptized with the Holy Spirit it felt like my spirit was set aflame with the knowlege and experience of Christ. Baptizing of water is an outside experience of an inside commitment.
