It's actually free to adopt from the Foster care system in the United States, and although PRIVATE adoption in the USA does cost a fair amount of money, foreign adoption is actually FAR more expensive in most cases($20,000+), as you must pay adoption organization fees, host country's adoption fees, the airfare and boarding for your trip to your child's country, translators, etc.

Coming from a family that works within the foster care system and personally have two cousins who were adopted from it, I can tell you that the children who are eligible for adoption and waiting for homes are usually 6, 7, 8 + years old after being taken away from their parents who abused/neglected them. Many have been exposed to drugs in the womb, and even more have severe behavioral problems that people are either unable to handle or are unwilling to expose their exsisting children to (such as innapropriate sexual behavior and touching, and violent behaviors.) Still, some people believe that children overseas with problems need families more (more about that below)

Virtually all INFANTS who are legally free (meaning parental rights are severed, and the child can be ADOPTED, and not just left in the foster care system) in this country are placed with permanent homes, so they'res no lack of willing adoptive parents in the states (just browse through the profiles on www.adoption.com of all the hopeful parents.) The dramatic stories you see in movies about children given up at birth and never finding homes are dramatized and are things of the past. There is no lack of homes for infants in this country.

The reason people turn to FOREIGN adoption is usually related to the quality of life the child would have otherwise. The United States has a foster care system which, although not perfect or ideal, can feed, clothe, and shelter children and help them transition into adulthood.

Whereas in places like China, Eastern Europe, and Africa, children often starve, lack medical care, are left in their cribs with no human interaction, and many children are considered "of age" and no longer are taken care of when they reach puberty. Consequently, countless children are left to roam the streets and be prostituded. Many die.

Domestic adoption within the United States is a wonderful thing, but some may argue that the children here are better off than those who need homes elsewhere.

It's cheaper and faster to adopt from other countries. I agree that there are so many children right here in our own country that need homes. But for some reason this country is racist/sexist/homophobic and will not let certain people adopt children because they are of a different race than the child, a single parent, or gay. Other countries are more open minded I think and understand that people can provide a safe and loving home for a child no matter if they are of a different race or orientation.

It is cheaper and easier to adopt in other countries than it is ours. You can not adopt in the traditional way in this country if you have had cancer or other major health issues no matter how long you have been free of diease. This is not true of other countries. The laws in this country also cause it to be easier for birth parents to change their minds, and get the child back. They have usually tried for years to have a baby of their own, and finally adopted. Their dream of having a child is finally relized and then the child gets ripped away from them. This scares a lot of people, and it is not very likely this will happen with an overseas adoption.

I've never adopted a child, so I can't say for sure, but I believe it's cheaper a lot of the time. Also, if you adopt a child from Ethiopia, what are the chances that the parent is going to come over here and try to get the child back? If you adopt a child from the U.S. and the parent changes their mind, whether it's been 10 days or 10 years, there will be a huge custody battle that you may not win.

Most people who choose international adoption want an infant, and international is a quicker way to obtain a baby vs. Domestic adoption. I agree with you that there are many children in our foster care system, unfortunately, many may never be adopted. The "choice" of adoption as an option for many couples is the result of years of infertility, and lost pregnancies (not all, but a large majority). It is a personal choice, and also, most people want an infant, for attachment issues/reasons. I'm not saying all people do that, but just giving you my thoughts based on my personal experience. I am choosing domestic adoption, not international, and my child will be from the Washington DC area and / or MD, VA (metropolitan area). I don't think it matters one way or another "where" you adopt from, it's a wonderful thing to do for a child, and for a waiting mother like me.

Our country is not the biggest population wise. Other countries have more homeless than our country does. Helping our country is good. If you want to adopt, try adopting a child here and a child in a foreign country.

I believe that people adopt from other countries because this is a popular trend right now. Also, it is sometimes very difficult and expensive for parents who might change their minds against the adoption, to find their children.

I see what you are saying. It is extermly difficult to adopt children here because there are holding times, waiting lists, and tons of requirements. In other countries they can adopt more easily.
