I looked on some pet forums and no one really had an answer. We adopted him from another family and they said he's always done it and "it's a beagle thing". I never heard of it. Any idea what's going on and how we can help him out? He seems okay, but I can't imagine that it would be any fun to honk and snort and cough like that...

Take him to the vet for a complete physical. The snorting, honking and sneezing can be caused by an allergy or even a more severe respiratory problem.
I once had a cat that coughed, sneezed and wheezed from the time that she was quite young. We found out too late that it was a sign of a heart problem that could have been taken care of long before it became critical.
Don't mess around. I work with dogs and have never heard of sneezing, honking and coughing being a common incident with beagles.

Beagle Coughing

I can't believe the number of people who would have you take your dog to the vet for the least little reason. Dogs, like people, have very different sinus passages and nose sizes. So any biological function that involves using them can be as varied as the nasal passage involved. I've had a chihuahua and a beagle who used to do the same thing. It's nothing serious. They could have swallowed something wrong; they could be coughing or sneezing; they could be laughing at us getting all worked up over nothing. Think of all the people you know and how different their coughs and laughs are. Same thing

My Mini Beagle is 9yrs old she does the reverse sneeze. Which is alarming the first time but if I hold her & talk to her calmly she calms down. Lately she's had a dry cough almost like she's coughing up a hair ball (but there's nothing) This is completely different than the reverse sneeze. I'm not sure which one your experiencing or if both! My Vet did tell me that Beagles ARE Drama Queens! But I❤️ Her!

Some breeds are prone to this; I wouldn't worry - but if it's every day you should talk with your vet. I've had this with some of my own dogs and the solution I have found is to grab this muzzle (using it like a handle) and push back (not up!) horizontally. This opens up the passage way and clears the problem. You'll see almost an immediate result, but keep this position for about 30 seconds. If it starts up again, do the procedure again. (Which just means you didn't do it quite long enough the first time.) Works like a charm!

I had a beagle and it was because he had asthma. Does he do this after hes excercized or was excited? Keep an eye on him to make sure it doesnt get any worse. If it does take him to a Vet. when he starts to grunt and snort you can calm him down by rubbing his throat.

My oldest beagle does the same thing, as does my rat terrier, especially when they get excited or startled. It's like a reverse sneeze...my beagle freaks out a bit when it happens but we just stand over him and lift his chest up until he is on his hind legs and pat his chest and talk to him until he calms down. If your dog is lying down when this happens you can stand them up like I described above or you can just pat their side and try to comfort them and calm them down. Our vet said that it's nothing serious!

I have a beagle and she does the same thing sometimes. I was informed by a vet that it was allergies. Kinda like the seasonal allergies that people get.

It could be "reverse sneeze." It's common with short nosed breeds and less so with breeds with longer muzzles but still possible. It's not harmful but you might want to get a vet's opinion.
