Absolutely.
Nightmares are scary dreams. Most children have them from time to time. One out of every 4 children has nightmares more than once a week. Most nightmares happen very late in the sleep period (usually between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.). Your child may wake up and come to you for comfort. Usually, he or she will be able to tell you what happened in the dream and why it was scary. Your child may have trouble going back to sleep. Your child might have the same dream again on other nights.

Yes, it's possible. I started having nightmares that I can still remember when I was 3, so I'm sure I had them before that too, I just can't remember it. My 2 1/2 year old did the same thing, waking up screaming, last night, and I'm pretty sure it was a nightmare.

Yes it's very possible. Put a nightlight in her room. And get her a stuffed animal or something ( a new one ) give it to her tell her that it will take all the bad dreams away. My mother mead me a Rudolph Pillow when I started having nightmares it worked like a charm. ( I still crawled into her bed though lol thats just cause I liked sleeping in her bed haha ) But it didn't help that my sisters was scaring me lol. she'll be fine believe me

My six year old use to have night terrors...very scary for all of us as she would scream and yell but would not be fully awake. I noticed a direct correlation with highly stimulating days...birthday parties, holidays etc...seemed to set her off. Now that she is older, she still wake up and tells me she is scared, she often cries in her sleep. I am not sure what is causing this, but I can remember having the same fears as a young child and the only thing that comforted me was mommy. I got over it, but I can remember really being scared. Just love and cuddle your child, it will pass!!

Have you changed any of her bedtime habits. When my son decided he wanted to listen to the radio at night while he was sleeping, he kept waking up with nightmares. I think he heard the noise and it made him have weird dreams. It took me a few days to figure it out and when I did, he stopped having the nightmares.

It's called night terrors. My kids had it. It's a phase they go through. You did the right thing by holding her and rocking her. They usually aren't fully awake and don't remember it the next day. It happened off and on for about a month. If it continues every night for awhile, I'd check with her pediatrician. Good Luck!

It certainly could be a nightmare. If it starts happening more often it could be night terrors: http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/142.html
