Good and evil are similar operating forces. Using cluster bombs on villagers is evil but it's a good way to kill the enemy. Liberating Iraq is good but it creates an evil civil war. Hanging a man is evil when Saddam ordered it but if a court orders it, its benevolent justice. If people are innately evil then they are also innately good

No, people are innately good we choose evil which is sin, thats what effects the world. Sin is the source of all the worlds sorrows. Jesus on the cross is the source of all the worlds happiness.

why would we want to believe that people are innately evil? there's good and bad in everybody. sometimes one outweigh the other.

We can't create anything without a belief and visualization, thus a belief in evil helps to create evil, perhaps this is why the Old Testament forbade creating images--which involves visualization. Thank you for asking.

they are born with a sinful nature.

many, many people live very good lives in spite of their sinful nature.
