i have to disagree with some of the answers above. i'm a black (close to, if not exactly, the tone you described), i have half sleeves (plus other ink), and my tattoos 'show up'.

i suggest you stick to black and grey work. bold colors (reds, dark blues, purples?) will 'show up' but they won't be as vibrant. but you're not working with a white canvas so it'll be like any color mixed with light brown.

i find it's better to have a very minimal use of ink. like a reverse tattoo. let your own skin be more of the filler. brown is a beautiful color and it's yours. rock it. so yeah, instead of a ink heavy tattoo (say a lion that's all black) get the outline of the lion and some shading to fill in but getting it solid black may come out to look like a blob.

also, go to the best artist/tattoo shop you can find. pay the extra price because it's worth it. you'll have that art for the rest of your life... pay the extra $100. and don't be afraid to ask your artist if they've worked with your tone before. if so, ask if there are pics of those pieces in their portfolio you can check out. they won't be offended. if they're good then they want you to get a beautiful piece of art that spotlights their talent.

my work is from a gentleman who happens to be brown (latino) and tattooed. not to say that a person of any other ethnicity wouldn't do just as wonderful work but i've found that his experience helps him be more creative and knowledgeable about working with my skin tone.

i hope this helps and makes some sense. good luck.

It depends on how dark your skin is... I go to Bexx at Capital Tattoo (http://www.capitaltattoos.com). My skin is what I guess you'd call medium brown--not too dark, and not too light--and I get full color tattoos that look great. I believe Jesse Smith (http://www.jessesmith.com) at Tattoo 702 is also experienced with dark skin, but he's got a massive waiting list. They're both in Richmond.

Regardless of who you go to, you should examine their previous work before you commit to allowing them tattoo you. Their portfolios should give you a good indication of whether they can work with your skin tone.

It doesn't show on dark skin. A waste of money. Keep your skin clear and clean and you will be radiant! (smile)
