I'm getting 3 wisdom teeth taken out next week (local anaesthetic) and I'm REALLY nervous. What should I expect?

I got my two upper wisdom teeth taken out about 2 years ago. It was done with local anethesia so I was awake. The actual experience was horrible because he put a lot of pressure on my face and I could hear him breaking the tooth as he was pulling. I think that was the worst part. They'll give you gauze to put in your mouth to control the bleeding and pain killers and antibiotics.

Now recently my lower left was coming out and it was really hurting me. It was partially out of the gum and the other was completely under the gum so they recommended me to an Oral Surgeon to remove them. I got the procedure done last Friday 2/2 and they put me to sleep. When I woke up I was completely oout of it. I was dizzy and had to be helped to walk out of the office. I had a lot of bleeding that day and then the pain started. They had prescribed me Vicodin for the pain what it's so strong that it hurt my stomach since I was not allowed to eat anything that morning. The worst part is that I had to eat soft foods like jello, pudding, soup and because of the anethesia I would vomit everything for like 2 days. Now 4 days later I am almost back to normal but still feel a little pain on one side which goes up to my head. It usually happens in the morning and night but I just take some Aleve or Advil and its gone right away. Today was the first day I ate some solid but which felt weird because I still have stitches in my mouth. Well that's my experience. I glad it's over and I dont have to deal with this ever again bc all 4 are gone!!!!

well, you have gotten a lot of answers so nothing I tell oyu will probably be new- but since I just got all four of my wisodm teeth removed this morning this might be the "freshest" answer, LOL.
I was a bit nervous, I dont like doctors and surgery , etc. but It really was nowhere near as bad as I expected. They should put you to sleep and except for an ornary tooth (like one of mine was) each extraction takes about 10 - 15 minutes so you are looking at about a 45 minute procedure which will feel like a minute from the time you go out to the time you wake up.
I got laughing gas first thing, It made me feel very very relaxed, calm and comfortable, next they gave me an IV which because of feeling so calm, I did not really even feel, next they gave me something to put me completely out.
I woke up an hour later and felt some pain but nothing extreme, mostly uncomfortable. My husband was in the room to hear the discharge instructions because under the effects of the anesthetic you will not remember everything told to you. I got home about 1:30- it is ten now- I have stayed on top of my pain meds all day and kept ice on my cheek (one side is not at all painful or even uncomfortable, the other is off and on and definitely uncomfortable but again nothing extreme. USE ICE- it will make a huge difference in your healing and pain levels. My lips are still kind of numb but I now have feelinin my tongue and the roof of my mouth. I can drink okay (no straws- this causes dry socket which impedes healing time) Now from what I hear from the doctor and others who have had this done, you will have a few days , should be no more than a week of discomfort and some mild pain but you will be back to normal in no time. I really thought it would be a big deal but so far it is not that bad, mostly uncomfortable.
Another thing is that the day after or second day after your surgery you may have quite a bit of soreness in your jaw because of the position it was in for so long during the surgery, Ice will also be essential for this.
I hope that all goes well for you, I am sure you are going to be fine.

Don't be nervous. I had all four taken out last summer--Aug 06. It wasn't a walk in the park (partially because two were impacted)but it wasn't as bad as I thought.

1-You should ask to be put under. That way you do hear the sounds or see what is going on.

2-Make sure you have someone with you that is not afraid to take action. I was thankful I did because unfortunately, I had a bad reaction and I was extremely woosie and I threw up in the office, the elevator and outside of the dental office.

3-stock up on all soft foods like jello, pudding, etc.

4-It may sound silly but have someone buy you a milkshake to drink soon after surgery. It was the best thing anybody could have gotten me after surgery. It was a little messy but great!

5- Follow your doctors advice to the letter and call them if you have any questions.

Good Luck!!

i had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted at the same time...i was completely out for the procedure which really made me loopy when i woke up...because you are only having a local, i suspect that you will just be a little swollen and sore after it wears off...you can expect your mouth to feel really weird while you are still feeling the effects of the medication...you will probably feel like your bottom lip is about 10 times too big, but i guarantee you, it wont be

Expect that it won't be nearly as bad as you think. Though I do recommend being asleep for the actual extraction, not because it hurts but simply because of the sounds and pulling and stuff. Afterward is really not bad at all. Stick to soft foods and Advil and you'll be fine in a couple days. Good luck!

oh.don't worry. i ve just been extracted and i m now in healing process.i did mine last week(2nd of febuary).at first i was so scared, i called the clinic many times, i tried find some informative article about the extraction, i even ask about it in Yahoo! asnwers, it s all because i was so scared.TRUST ME. it WASN"T BAD after all. when the doctor started do his job, i felt so relaxed ( they didn't gave me an IV or laughting gas or anything, they just numb my teeth). i didn't hurt at all. i just felt some pressure from the machine but nah, it didn't hurt. u shuld close ur eyes if u scared because the doctor asked me to do so. so i just closed my eyes during the process.it took only 20 minutes for mine and for u it depends on how complicated is urs.

Relaxe.and i wish u good luck. I was so scared( I MEAN REALLY2x SCARED) but after all, it was a good experienced and i m going to extract one more teeth probally in april- im going to wear braces, so i had to remove 2 my wisdom tooth,

I just got one of my upper ones out today, and they just did the local numbing. It took literally 5 mins! I was so freakin scared before, I was shaking. Then they started and after a little pulling and pressure, he said, okay its all out. I was like, are you serious? Thats it!?!?! haha. So it shouldnt be that bad. If you are not being put to sleep or anything, it probably is because its not a serious case, the bad ones you hear about are the ones that are impacted and they have to cut out. Good luck!
