Hi there...excessive thirst can be a result of either hyperthyroidism, feline diabetes or renal disorders:

Hyperthyroidism: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/thyroid__signs__symptoms_and_d.html
Feline Diabetes: http://felinediabetes.com/diabetes-info.htm

Some cats can also have excessive thirst as a result of lower urinary tract disorders which we discovered with one of our recent rescues we took in.

You need water to live, so does your cat. I think you're really asking if EXCESSIVE drrinking is a problem. But that said, since cats have to lick water up with their tounges it takes longer than drinking otu af a glass so it seems like they're drinking a long time. Try it: put water in a bowl and use your tongue to drink it. Not so easy, huh? If he drinks much more suddenly than he ever did, it COULD be a problem... call the vet and schedule an appointment, they can do a simple blood test to make sure he's healthy.

I never heard that it is bad for cats to drink too much water. I have two cats and they drink a lot of water. I have heard that it is bad for cats to drink milk all the time after a certain age. I think that your cat is going to be fine and you shouldn't worry.Cats that do not take in enough water can suffer serious health problems, in particular urinary tract disease. Ensuring a plentiful water intake can prevent many cases of cystitis in cats.Cystitis literally means inflammation of the bladder. It is a common problem in pet cats, and is often referred to as 'FLUTD' or 'feline lower urinary tract disease. I hope that this answers your question.

You should take your cat to the vet and ask. Increased thirst is one of the symptoms of a kidney problem, I had a two-year-old male cat who died from kidney failure in the '70s, when they couldn't do much to help him (he had kidney stones). Now they have lots of ways to treat kidney disease with diet, medication and ultra sound, so your pet can live to a ripe old age. My last cat died of renal failure in November, but she had kidney disease for over 15 years, and all it required was a change in her diet (subscribed by the vet). She lived until she was 19 and a half. Increased thirst can be a symptom of many other things as well, so a blood test by your vet can put you on the right path.

Drinking an excessive amount of water could be due to a medical issue. Diabetes or kidney disease. If you are concerned you need to take your cat to the vet. Bloodwork will need to be done to make a correct diagnosis

What else would your cat drink if it doesn't drink water? They don't drink milk forever, it isn't healthy for them! Just like people some get more thirsty then others. Leave out water for your cat to drink at her own desire.

Take your cat to the vet and have him do a diabetes test. Well, tell him you think somethings wrong with your cat because he drink so much water and make sure he gives him a diabetes test with whatever tests he does.

Good luck.

Hell yes its bad. Take him to the vet immediately and tell him the cat is drinking water. Probably do some kind of emergency surgery.......on your head.
