I will go along with a friend of mine. I will save my mother. And my friend will save my father.
Your question assumes that one who goes for saving knows swimming very well!
Interesting question but is very very tough for most people to answer. To choose between father and mother is hell of a job and the very idea of making a choice would be frightening and shameful for many of us.
I, of course, would not deny the ease with which some of us could reply to this tough question. May be, they are having some experiences or some true stories to help them out!

My mother because I'm sure my father wouldn't let me save him if it would mean my mother dying. That's just the kind of guy he is. He's also a better swimmer.

Yeah that's pretty morbid. I suppose I'd save whoever had the least chance of getting out on his/her own. But I definitely don't agree with the "neither, I want the insurance" popular choice.

What a great question! Very thought provoking. I would love to have someone ask my son this question and then make me privied to it.
So to answer your question, I would have to say my dad. He has always been there for me, unconditionally. My mom would lie and say, "please come to me with anything and I will be there for you." But when I would, she would berate me, make me feel bad, call me names and belittle me. I fell for that a few times and then finally learned she didn't really mean it. However, my dad, he truly loved me, (and my siblings), unconditionally. I have never seen him made and anything, no matter what I told him, even personal girly things, he would always try to help me or steer me in the right direction. Everyone loves my dad for the very same reason. He is truly the greatest.
Thanks for the question, it made me think about him today even more.
