Before telling about Krishna Consciousness or God Consciousness, it should be made clear that God has many names, viz., Allah, Jehovah, YWHA, Bhagavan, Brahman, Paramatma, Jagannatha etc... without limit.
Sometimes it is said that God has no names, meaning nobody knows how many names God has got. He has got unlimited names. Therefore, nobody knows exactly as to how many names God has got.
The name of God, "Krishna" means all attractive because of possessing the six opulences, viz, all beauty, all knowledge, all wealth, all strength, all opulence and all renunciation in complete. In fact Krishna exhibited all of them while He was present 5000 years back in Vrindavana, India.
The Krishna Consciousness Movement was started in the west and spread throughout the world by the founder of ISKCON.
Srila A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
ISKCON(International Society for Krishna Consciousness)
The word "Krishna Consciousness" is taken from a Sanskrit verse found in the Padyavali 14, an anthology compiled by Srila Rupa Gosvami. The translation is as follows.
“‘Pure devotional service in Krishna consciousness cannot be had even by pious activity in hundreds and thousands of lives. It can be attained only by paying one price—that is, intense greed to obtain it. If it is available somewhere, one must purchase it without delay.’”
Srila A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has said so much about Krishna Consciousness. In his own words, below is something about his taking the word "Krishna Consciousness".
In another poetry Rupa Gosvami says, Krishna-bhakti-rasa-bhavita matih kriyatam yadi kuto 'pi labhyate. This 'Krishna consciousness', I have taken this from this word krishna-bhakti-rasa-bhavita matih. This is actual translation in Sanskrit.
So Rupa Gosvami advises that "Krishna consciousness, if it is possible, please purchase. Don't delay, purchase immediately!"
Krishna-bhakti-rasa-bhavita matih kriyatam yadi kuto 'pi labhyate "Where it is available? It is very nice thing."
"Yes, it is available. You can purchase. The movement is going on."
"And what is the price?"
"It is such a nice thing; you have to pay price." "Yes, there is price."
"What is that?"
Tatra laulyam ekalam mulyam: "Simply your eagerness. That is price. This price you have to pay." Then you get Krishna immediately. Krishna is not poor and the Krishna-seller, the Krishna devotee, he is also not poor. He can distribute Krishna free. And he's doing that. Simply you have to purchase by your eagerness. That is wanted.
