Other than watching her 24/7 and keeping her confined 2 one room when the door is open, how do I get her out of this dangerous habit? If she does get out again how do i catch her? She just runs away from me and i'm scared she'll get hit by a car if she carries on. HELP! I am responsible with my dog but she is really mischeivous.

I have a Jack Russel/ Beagle mix and he's 10yrs old. He still does this. I either have one of my kids hold his collar when I answer the door or if no one else is home, I put him on his lead. Problem is when mine gets out, he won't come back to me unless I pick him up in the car. He loves car rides more than running.

I can point you into a very good direction to seek help. Watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel!! This man covers all bases and is amazing in his understanding of dogs! He covers many problems very similar to this and is just amazing in how quickly and efficiently he can fix problems like these. His motto is he that he doesn't train dogs, he rehabilitates humans. Because almost all problems relating to bad animal behavior is us not understanding how to deal with the problem.

This is how I would handle the problem. First leash your dog inside. You hold the leash and have someone walk out the door, the first sign that the dog is getting ready to bolt, correct him with a *key word* and tug on the leash. Continue to do this over and over until the dog gets the hint. It is crucial to start to correct the bad behavior as SOON as it begins. So as someone is walking out the door, if the dog even looks at the door, tug at the leash and issue your command. As long as you are consistent, your problem should start to correct itself very quickly. Practice also with someone coming in.

The Dog Whisperer had an episode recently that was close to this and I once again urge you to check him out. Here is a link and it should list the time he comes on in your area.

Consistency is the key with each and every member of the household committing to the same training of the dog.

I hope this helps!!

i saw this on dog borstal on sky the person ended up being told by the dog trainer to put the dog on a lead when they went to answer the door and take the dog with them and make the dog sit before opening it and stay then not jump up at the person and give the dog a small treat if they do it successfully the dog may take a while but it is a safe option this dog took about 3 weeks to learn it

my mums dog is a jack russell and she is exactly the same you need to keep doors shut till she calms down and gets a bit older my mums dog is 18 mouths old she can take her the park and let her off the lead now try that then she would get more freedom and less likley to run off good luck!
