She is an amazing dog and I really do not have problems with her. Except that she hates to be brushed. Her coat is all matted. Besides shaving, how can I get rid of the knots? How can I get her to let me brush her hair when it is all combed out?

Schnautzers are really great dogs - I've had 3 of them. The are very smart too don't you agree? Their coats are so soft, very fine and they don't shed which makes them matt a lot. When I gave them a bath I always used baby conditioner to de-tangle their fur. I also combed their coat starting on the ends and worked upwards. Taking them for grooming became quite costly so I invested in some really good dog shears and learned to do it myself. I'ts not really that hard especially if you put them on a small table and a leash like they do at the groomers. I also purchased a razor comb that's made to thin out the matts, again starting at the tips of their coat. You can also get thinning scissors at a beauty store like Sally's and they aren't too expensive - around $15. I don't know for sure if this would work but when my kids were little a got gum stuck in their hair I used peanut butter and the gum came right out! :) If you groom your dog often and not alway necessarily to get the matts out she will start to enjoy being brushed. Right now she hates it because she is smart enough to associate brushing = pain. I say take her to the groomer this time to get her coat nice de-matted. Then begin brushing her everyday in your lap and talk to her all the way through it - making it a pleasant experience. Not only will this keep her fear and tangles at bay, it will give you both quality time. Should you decide to buy a grooming kit, invest a little more $ into a better quality brand than the lowest priced one. The blade stays sharp and will last longer. Be sure and keep them well cleaned and oiled after each use. I learned this the hard way...had to buy a second razor and wound up spending more in the long run. Hope this helps. Also, if you like my answer the best will you please give me a yellow star cuz it will buy me more time per day on this forum... :)

Hi, I have the same problem, my puppy hates to be brushed. When I start to brush him he bites my hand and tries to take the brush away from him, I have tried several methods, one: I brush him while he is sleeping (it works) but sometimes he is just not up to it so I bought a muzzle and now when I brush him I put his muzzle on, brush him and then remove it. Although he doesn't like the muzzle at least he stays still and doesn't bite my had :) . Good luck!
