When I have Microsoft Outlook loaded and running (either on my desktop or laptop), it appears to access the hard drive every second. Not only is it audibly annoying, I'm guessing that it's not terribly good for the hard drive either.

Does anyone know why Outlook does a hard drive seek every second - or if there's some setting that I can change to get it to quit? Thanks!

Tools... Options... Mail Setup... Send/Receive...

The "Schedule an automatic send/receive every ... minutes" is unchecked in both the "Setting for group 'All Accounts'" and the "When Outlook is Offline" section.

Would this being unchecked make it check every second?

Hi - I was having the same phenomena. As others have mentioned, turning off the "Schedule automatic send and receive" stopped the problem.

I am also baffled that this works. It does not make sense that auto checking mail every 5 min would cause the hardrive to cycle every second or so. But that seems to be the case.

I'm here scratching my head wondering why outlook would be searching your hard drive. If any thing it should be searching the outlook server to see if you have any mail sitting on the server that needs to be pulled down to your hard drive. With that said, I will assume that it's searching the server. To rectify your problem - from outlook click on Tools>Options>Mail Setup>Send/Receive>make sure there is a check mark in the box titled Schedule and automatic send/receive every>set the intervals at which you want outlook to search and pull down your mail.

Hope this solves your problem. If it doesn't then you've got an issue that I'm not familiar with.

Good Luck!
