Here is the problem.
I am watching a DVD that has 5.1 Dolby Digital. I get sound out of front and rear speakers and the subwoofer. However, nothing comes out of my center channel speaker. Now, when I run the little test program on my reciever, it makes the proper noise in the center channel speaker. So clearly the speaker is fine and its connection to the receiver is fine. So I feel there is something wrong with either the way the DVD players is sending out the center channel signal, or there is something wrong with the way the receiver is receiving that signal from the DVD player. Anyone have this before, or have any thoughts?

I have already reseated all connections and have tried with multiple DVD's. The DVD player shows the dolby digital icon on the display, so its playing in DD. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be putting surround sound to the rear speakers, which it is.

I am using component cables from DVD to Reciever. I have switched them around with no change. I was trying to avoid buying an optical cable, but I guess I might have to. If an optical cable doesn't work, then I am guessing that it might be the DVD player.

if your receiver has an optical receiver i suggest u use it for connecting your dvd player. may be u can also try coaxial cable to connect if u dont have optical input or output from dvd player. if you have used analogue connections to connect it to your receiver then check that the cable that sends the center signal to the receiver is working by replacing it with other cable also check if the player is sending the signal at all or not.
other thing that your receivers center channel receiving port may be damaged so as you said it will produce the test sound but not the movie sound.
One medicine for all the probs...
Use an optical cable or a coaxial.

Go into your recievers menu and check to make sure that CENTER is on and not in a "phantom" mode some recievers have the option to eliminate the center when you dont have one and send the sound to the front 2. The test will sound even if it is not selected that signal is on a different override

if your using digital out (fiber or coax) and you can hear all the channels except the center your digital output dsp or Input dsp is bad, if your sending them thru 5.1 rca to rca (this means your using rca cables for each channel of the 5.1 from dvd to receiver) then your center channel rca cable is bad. check to see that the cables are good a simple continuity test can determine this.

if you are getting the test noise from all of the speakers and the center and not from the DVD check to make sure your effects is on, then check the DVD player to make sure that it is dig. sound 5.1
if all things are right, check it with another DVD moive

You need to check all the wires (Inputs and outputs) to make sure everything is hooked up correctly.

below it or above it would be ideal locations, but not too close to the floor mine is on the top shelf of the 2 shelf stand below the HD monitor
