My dads' symotoms:
1) blood loss: He needed 4 units of blood after receiving 2 units on Jan 13.
stool is black and sticky.
2) extreme difficulty breathing, needs to be on oxygen. Suffers from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
3) colonoscopy did not show any problems.
4) prior to receiving todays' 4 units of blood, he had suspended additional tests, probably due to either fear or aggravation.

If he had blood loss with 'black stool' and a negative colonoscopy ...he might have bleeding from upper gastrointestinal tract. Upper GI bleeding can be due to: 1) Bleeding peptic ulcer 2) Esophageal or gastric cancer 3) Varaceal bleed as a result of cirrhosis of liver etc etc

yes i agree with md gal. Sounds like a bleed coming from the upper GI. does he have history of ulcers? Your dad for sure sounds like he has a bleed somewhere just because of the way the stool looks and his blood count is off. Sometimes, these bleeds stop on their own and no treatment is needed. Other times it needs to be addressed. As for the COPD, that is a tough disease to watch and deal with. Basically they feel like they are smothering. I could not imagine. Watch the O2 setting. Don't turn it up sky high just to make him feel better. Too much O2 can be just as harmful. Things that can help are: staying in a cool room, keep the bed elevated or have him sit up in a chair if he gets short of breath. I'm sure he is probably on breathing treatments but if not that can help to expand the airway. Also try some mucinex. This will help to cut down on the mucous which tends to block the airway also. Watch is hgb level. if it keeps going down then the bleed is still there and needs to be addressed. He also needs to be on iron tabs. I would hope these are things that the dr. has done for him but if not then you need to find him a new doc...Good luck.

I don't know where you life, but I, or would get him to the Houston Heart Institute or St. Lukes Hospital in Houston, Texas, they will not give up until they find they problem. Call St Lukes at (713)785-8537 or call Dr Frazier (832)355-3000 heart doctor, or Dr. Frank Smart (832)355-3977, these two doctors did not accept payment, and saved my husbands life.

I agree with MD Gal opinion, have them do the complete blood count, pay attention to the count of the white blood cells(leukocytes), because low count is a "good" sign of a cancer. Then go from there.

use the info MD_gal gave and get in the face of the people helping your dad. Get them moving to find the answers. Give them the information you have and tell them to find out. Don't let them give you lame excuses. Keep after them. It is your job to fight for your dad's rights right now as he is probably unable to do so. My prayers go out to you and yours! God Bless!

I don't know, but I feel sorry for him and you.
I pray that they find out what is causing his problem.
I suggest that you pray as well for his recovery. Prayer sometimes can work miracles.
