I have heard it said by scientists that within our bodies we actually harbor more invasive bacteria, virus, and parasite cells than human cells. Each of them depends on humans. Then there are the bacteria that consume us upon death.
Dogs, cats, mice, rats, pigeons, and gray squirrels are probably more abundant, thanks to human beings.
That said, I hardly think these count as purpose. So we serve no purpose other than our own survival. Which, after all, is the only purpose for algae, bacteria, viruses, and parasites, too.

No, the photosynthetic algae have a far greater purpose. They produce oxygen and food for other life forms. Humans only consume.

Actually, I think humans serve the opposite purpose of photosynthetic algae.
Humans don't want to admit that they only serve themselves, and have divorced themselves from whatever natural order they once had in the world's ecosystem.

There are a few extremophiles that have evolved to live in heavy-metal laden water such as quary water, and such water pretty much ONLY exists in the form of quaries.
Get rid of humans and human activities, eventually the quaries dry out, and these species die.
Of course, these species wouldn't EXIST without us having interfered in the first place...

To reflect God's glory. Sadly, we tend to fail in this at present but when Jesus returns and the earth is cleansed of sin then it will be very different place. We must thank our LORD God for His plan and purpose with us and the earth and trust that in His grace and mercy we might have a part in that wonderful time ahead when His son returns.

Humans serve no greater purpose; they only serve themselves and use whatever resources they like in the process without regard to consequences.

God created all life on earth to be inter-dependant on each other, what we experience though is discord in the perfection that was originally planned because of the fall of Man.

Good point. It's almost as if the rest of creation were organized specifically to support humanity...
It's also interesting to note that we alone of all known life are asking questions like this...

Curiosity! We are a very curious race of people. We must interfere or meddle or investigate. We call it learning. Some call it gaining Knowledge. Without curiosity you would not have asked that question.
