My partner had a teacher who forced him to practice with calligraphy and paint brushes - as this is harder than using the average pen or pencil is makes you more aware of your hand movements. Whilst he didn't appreciate it at the time - it did work. A fun alternative may be japanese calligraphy if the child is creative and enjoys art.
