My partner had a teacher who forced him to practice with calligraphy and paint brushes - as this is harder than using the average pen or pencil is makes you more aware of your hand movements. Whilst he didn't appreciate it at the time - it did work. A fun alternative may be japanese calligraphy if the child is creative and enjoys art.

practice, practice, practice. there are good workbooks available at discount stores or ask the teacher for worksheets. make sure you use the form that is taught at the school, e.g. DeNealian or Zaner-Bloser
