At night, my cat Flop spends several minutes just digging, and pawing through his litter. Its loud and wakes me up often, I yell for him to quiet down and he runs away for a minute before returning and pawing through it again. Hes not using it just pawing through it. Is the trying to get my attention about something, or just trying to keep himself entertained while I sleep, and how do I stop it!

I cannot just move his litterbox to another room at night because I have a roomate and sleep with the door closed, and if he is not in the room with me he goes insane and scratches the carpet up at the door and meows loudly keeping both me and my roomate awake.

A cats instinct is to bury it's doings to hide the scent so that it cannot be traced by enemies. A younger cat may be too finicky about residual smells which we cannot sense. I remove the poos and clumps of wet litter frequently and keep lots of clean litter in the tray. You can also get deodorizers to help, but I have not used them. Having said that they can sometimes do it even then. Perhaps when young or through a mild feeling of insecurity. If you think he is bored hang a couple of toys up or do things like leaving balls of paper about to amuse him. Luckily older cats seem to get used to sleeping human hours which helps a lot.

Hi, It is time to move the litter box somewhere else. You might want to have him checked by your vet to rule out any other problems like a urine infection to be on the safe side. Good Luck!

ask your vet. could have a bladder infection and can't go. You could just move the litter box somewhere else but make sure it knows were it is and uses it before it goes where it use to.

if his litter is not very clean, and it smells, even slightly, to him, he tries to cover it. Or he tries to dig a hole big enough to poop - my cat digs and digs when he needs to poop, and sometimes he doesn't finally poop, because he wants fresh litter to cover the smell. I am taliking about very slight smell, but for them it is important. Or he is trying to get your attention, ny cat doe sthat too.

He is very picky about where he POOPS!!! Move the litter box farther away from where you sleep, he will still be able to dig & you'll be able to sleep. EVERYBODY'S HAPPY!!!
