west highland terrier.
i think that's the best for you
it's very beautiful, does not shed too much and is a family dog.
i guess it's a pure breed anyway.
i don't like mixed breds as they can't enter any family dog competition.

I think this question is funny, only because I'm pretty sure every answer is going to be heavily biased by the terrier the answerer has...

And, I'm no exception!

I have a smooth coat fox terrier. He's the love of my life! He's 14 years old. He has been really great with kids of all ages. He's feisty, energetic, and athletic, but he's a dog's dog and get's along well with all other breeds.

Yes, a lot of behaviors are based on genetic predisposition, but a lot of it is in how you raise them too!

The fox terrier doesn't shed too much. If you really want to avoid shedding, I suppose you should be looking for a wire haired dog (they do have wire haired fox terriers, but they're not nearly as precious!). Or, poodles, which don't shed at all.

You did not mention what size you would like.

Here is a website that has a questionarre/search tool that will give you breed recommendations based on your answers to the questions. I found it to be pretty accurate in their recommendations. My breed was listed at 97% in closest matching. Maybe a better match for you would be a breed from a non terrier group. Research the breed thoroughly to make sure it is what you want and can manage.

My sister has owned two Cairn terriers. As far as the yapping, I think it goes with the job description of being canine. I thought they were really quite a nice little dog. But I prefer Pugs. Good luck.

The only terriers I've ever seen were yappy and hyper.

There's only a few breeds of dogs that do not shed---shih tzu, poodle, bichon and...I think there's one more but I cant remember.

Shih tzu's are good with kids and older folks, and they are actually pretty feisty guard dogs, too!

I would suggest a Boston Terrier. They like all people. Minimal hair, so minimal shedding. Not really barkers unless someone knocks on the door.

I have a gorgeous 19yr old miniature Maltese terrier, he does not: yap, malt, is great with my children, good with strangers, but won’t lend himself to just any1, he is great with older people, does have a lot of hair, but can be clipped easily, and does not malt. I have 2 fully grown Rottweilers, yet my malty rules this k-9 camp big time! He sleeps with me all year round and keeps a vigilant eyes 24/7. Such a pleasure to have him around….I am proud to call him my doggy ;) p.s: pooh patrol is so easy as they waste such little amounts… this is a bonus!

Shih-tzus don't shed alot and I never met one I did't like, yet. I don't know if they are a member of the Terrier family, though.

I would suggest either a scotish terrier or a wheaton terrier.

Wheatons are not as yappy and extremely good with kids.
