No, people do not become "possessed" by demons (I don't believe in demons anyway) or the spirit world.

A lot, if not all of it is mental health issues.

Like any illnessess you can have acute (servere but short lasting) and chronic. Quite often it's the acute cases, ones that come on suddenly with complete personality change which is take for possession. Or you get people that remain in control of their faculties, but believe they are possessed, or have a spirit attachment.

Fifteen years of working as a nurse with patients that have mental health problems, and also working as a Spiritualist medium. I come across a lot of this!

In my experience all are mental health issues.

Exorcisms are real... people really get dressed up and throw holy water at people.

Possesion by demons is not real. Exorcisms are a form of physical and mental abuse towards a person who may already be psychologically damaged.

If someone believes that they are possessed and they also believe that the hocus-pocus of an exorcism can 'cure' them...then where's the harm? Now..if someone claims someone else is possessed...that's a totally different animal.

I don't know, I think it is more complicated than simply an earlier understanding of mental illness. And the superstition regarding it helps obscure the truth, whatever that is.

Also there is enough everyday evil in the world, wars and famines etc., to worry too much about demons.

Nope - it makes for great movies and books - but alas - this all mumbo jumbo designed to scare the uneducated masses. In the past "possession" by demons was used as an excuse to kill people as being witches (possessed by the demons!), ostracize those with seizure disorders (demons again!), or bring the unruly teenager into line (they're possessed!).

If you want something to be afraid of - fear those who believe that demons exist. They are the ones who have lost the ability to reason.

I've seen a well built man behaved like a dainty lady in the mental ward before...weeks later when he was discharged...he was man again.

Family said he offended a spirit and I have to believe in demon possession.

Yes... But true possesions are very, very rare. Emily Rose is based on a true story by the way...
