It can totally screw you up. Bi-polar is basically messed up chemicals in your brain. Well, mood stabilizers are chemicals and if they are not the correct chemicals and are introduced to the messed up chemicals in your brain. What do you think you'll get? A chemical crash. Make sure your doctor is prescribing the meds. NEVER EVER take someone else's meds. Some side effects from mood stabilizers include: nausea, vomitting, sleepiness, dizziness, aggressive behavior, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and many others. There are tons of medications for brain disorders. Finding the right one is basically trial and error. I have had my problems with meds. Still trying to figure out the right med and the right dosage which are the two key points. Sometimes doctors will prescribe what the pharmaceuticals are trying to push. See what works for you. You can also google bi-polar disorder and see the variety of meds and their side effects. Good luck.

Well, lithium can hurt your kidneys. There are ways to lessen the risk, such as drinking enough water and having your blood tested regularly. I'm not too familiar with the others.
