drampor,

That is fascinating, I would like to see this for myself so I might have a chance to further understand how it is possible. Do you recall the name of the program? Thanks.

nondescript,

I do not disagree with you. I am more so interested if people believe they are able to process thoughts without a brain though.

Sparky the wonder,

As far as I know, clinical death is the cessation or disruption of blood flow and no breathing, people are still able to have dream like states as the neurons are still operating within the brain for some time after clinical death was pronounced.

Thank you all for participating and most of you for giving me some information that might guide me towards more knowledge of this subject. I still think it is impossible to think without a brain, but I will review all of your answers and do further research on the matter.

Yes. Theorectically, it is possible to replace the brain with an equivalent computer. However, that's not going to happen in the near future. Of course, you could expand the definition of brain to including non-biological computers. In that case, you couldn't. There has to be some logic processing somewhere in there to be able to think.

I think that you and many of those answering may be confusing mind with brain. Your brain is an amazing organ it controls our muscles, respiration, pulmonary function and a host of other lesser known functions, but it does not think.

Thought is a function of mind that exists independent of anything physical. What appears to be the brain thinking in brain function imaging and other brain measuring attempts is only blood flow being measured to the part of the brain that acts as an interface between the mind and the body. This is the secondary function of the brain after regulating bodily functions. It acts as the interface, or the mind body connection.

Without it there would be no way for the nonphysical mind to exert any control over the physical body.
It is interesting that science has done its best to overlook this fact for so long. The silly idea that thought is some magical function of some mysterious electrochemical reaction is so vague as to be hilarious. There are several ways to disprove this theory beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Being nonphysical in source your mind is in no way effected by the death of the body and loss of the mind body interface, or brain.

Love and blessings.

I believe it is possible to think without a brain. I watched an intriguing program on public television regarding this subject and there was a young lad born with a birth defect that left His skull cavity devoid of a brain, it was filled entirely of fluid yet He was capable of thought and expression. Fascinating to bear witness to.

There is a passage (Bible) about rightly dividing the soul from the spirit.

Most agree this is a direct reference to the body and the spirit.

When a lost soul is born again, the spirit is reborn. The spirit needs no body (brain) to think.

"What is born of the flesh is flesh, what is born of the spirit is spirit" This is what Jesus told Nicodemus when asked, "can a man re-enter his mothers womb!"

It must not be thinking as we know thinking. Spirits of any kind think with no body (brain)

Sure - after I die, my brain will turn back to dust, but my soul will continue and I will continue to think.

Science still does not understand how a brain 'thinks'. It can record electrical and chemical impulses. It can record increased or decreased blood flow. It cannot record the thought process.

Actually if you believe that your existance in this world is possible because you have something, called a soul inside, you can understand, that thinking is a soul thing, soul is your spiritual being, like a driver in the vehicle. Soul can exists without the body, while the body cannot be alive without a soul. Therefore, thought can form without a brain, but not in this material world.

Great works of poets, painters, philosophers, inventors, educators,,,are not the products of the brains. Otherwise, scientists can use chemicals to create geniuses with no need of physical, intellectual and spiritual education.
Use your brain to make yourself a Shakespeares to prove your philosophy.

I could imagine a lifeform capable of thought without a brain as we define it. It's all in the definitions, baby.

No I cannot think without my brain, Fortunately, I have a very good one. The fact that I have an ancestry of billions, every single one of which survived long enough to reproduce, left me with a very well adapted one.
