I'm curious, say I was a doctor or an engineer (on civie street) and I was drafted (I'm in the UK, but I'm curious about the other countries too), does everyone join at the same rank (aside from the officer/non officers split)?

Or do you get given a token promotion to give you some authority?

You can go through the commissioned officer or non commissioned officer route. Either way you start at the bottom and have to work your way up the distinctly separate career paths. Your experience from civvy street would be relevant and would determine your starting point. You can move from the non to the commissioned route by attending Sandhurst etc. as an officer cadet.

In the US, doctors and other professions are selected and brought in as officers. Typically they will start off as an 0-2 and will make 0-3 within a year or two of commissioning. While this does give them a certain level of authority, they are not authorized to take command of a combat unit unless there are no combat trained officers available. An Unrestricted Line Ensign will take command of a ship before an Admiral in the Supply Corps will.

If you joined the basic ranks, you would start off as a Private, Corperal if you've got previous experience.

However, specialising in a medical case would not give you any pat on the back promotion, as you're given the same breaks as everyone else, the Army expects you to work hard, not because of what you've done or where you've been, but because of what you're going to do, and where you're going to go.

Your first 3 months is basic training anyhow, such as basis survival, how to use and maintain an assault rifle, such as the SA80.
After that 3 months, you're then given an option of where you wish to specialise in, so you will start at the bottoom and work your way up, the same as everyone else in your chosen field.

Some military bodies, (though I'm not sure which, and I apologise for this), don't have a ranking system for departments such as medical, though some medical personnel will hold a rank of some sort.

Nope, if you get drafted, you're goin straight out infantry, thats what the draft was created for, and You will be a private.

If you were a Doc, or Engineer, Id say join up before they can draft your *** and be an officer. Only if you think you'r gonna be drafted though

Yes everyone has the same rank, then aftern basic training they start to make a selection of any recruits they think have potential for promotion.

all doctors in the uk forces must be officers and they get fast track promotion in return for years of service, engineers can either be pond life (like me) or sit in the ivory tower pretending to understand the meaning of being a real engineer
