I'm mixed and have lived extensively in asia as well as in Australia. Asians consume very very little dairy (until recent times) and very few highly refined carbs such as bread. I always drop weight in asia and pile it on back here.
As a general rule, most asians living in a western country and living on a western diet are heavier than those on an asian diet.
The type of calcium that is in dairy cannot be absorbed by the body, it's the wrong kind. They get their calcium from fish and vegetables. Australia has the highest rate per capita of dairy consumption in the world and also the highest rate of osteoporosis and many other bone deficiencies. Don't believe that you need to chow down dairy for the calcium, it's such a scam. You can look into the right type of calcium that we need and can absorb, I am not quite sure of the details. One of my scientist friends explained it to me once, but I've forgotten, lol.
Think about it, there are basically no dairy cows in asia. All of their milk and cheese is imported but that's only been happening for hte past couple of decades, but asians have had healthy diets for centuries and haven't got histories of bone issues.
I am on low dairy now and have cut back on highly refined carbs such as pasta and bread and I always have so much energy. I think it's very suspicious that so many people can't tolerate dairy or can't have much of it. I don't think it's great for our bodies. I personally feel very sluggish after eating dairy (although I love it)
Hope all this answered your question.

Moderation is key. I live in Japan and, after adapting to the diet here, found I lost weight, had more energy and feel better. When I go back to the States, two days of Taco Bell and =WHAM= I feel bloated and dull.
A lot of the dairy done in Asia is in the form of yogurt. I have a cup a day at least. Not to say regular milk and milk products aren't there, but I have seen yogurt as the primary dairy food.

Many asian people have problems digesting lactose - the sugar found in many dairy products. Western cultures tend to not have this problem, hence the saying "drink your two cups of milk a day."
In addition to milk products, you can get calcium from eating fish with the bones, tofu, greens (brocolli, chard) and legumes.

Swany,
I cannot speak for peoples in Southeast Asia, but in Japan, dairy products are available there in abundance. Yogurt is especially popular, and, of course, ice cream.
Dairy intake in of itself will not render one obese. Moderation in all things.

They eat dairy, but not in the amounts Westerners tend to. Their diet is also rich in "good" fats and fibre rich, both factors wich are important in health and weight maintainance.
