Give me a break! Everyone is trying to justify smoking pot. That isn't the question. Lung cancer can be caused by breathing a substance that damages the lung tissue. So yes, inhaling the smoke from a burning substance can do that. However, unless you are smoking some horrific amount of pot, the chances are probably slim that you will get lung cancer. There are lots of things that can kill you, you just have to weigh the risks and decide if they are acceptable.

I think it's not really an issue of cancer at all... We all know that the government makes huge $$$ on catching pot sellers and pot smokers. Think of all of the potheads on probation who slip up and smoke it, then they're back to paying huge fines, etc. My second theory is that the government might truly have the interest of our population in their hearts, which I doubt, but anyways...I compare smoking pot with drinking alcohol. The effect is just about the same, in my opinion. The thing is, catching a drunk driver is a lot easier than catching a high driver. Theres not a breath analyzer test for pot smokers so it would be hard to control, unless the cop goes with smelling it on someone, but then still, what if you're at a party and people around you smoke it, it gets on your clothes, etc. If you can pass a sobriety test under the influence of pot its likely you can also pass one under the influence of alcohol which many people can, Anyways, those are my 2 scenarios I think are the likely reason pot is not legal.

the only link to anything found so far is that smoking can cause temporary memory loss...but its temporary memory and it only lasts as long as you smoke it.

past that, anything else is a theory.

I see by other answers many have been brainwashed by the propaganda for it all. Read the facts, not what others tell you they "think". Pot has been used for thousands of years by all cultures of the earth as a healer and a herb.

So all these cultures for thousands of years knew nothing but man today knows it all? Thats funny....seeing how man today just realized things like Pluto in the 1950's yet the Ancients have it marked in their drawings as being there.

And pot does NOT have the same items cigs have....cigs are tobacco and then multiple chemicals are added to them. Never seen so many brainwashed, just sad.

Being a native indian, I smoke, and have for over 20 yrs. I have no issues, I never get sick either...huh...isn't that odd. But I better listen to all those that pill poppers and listen to doctors who "practice" medicine....guess they forgot what "practice" means.

To the person who said "it can mess up your brain". Sure would like her to explain then why I had a 114 IQ when I didn't smoke yet now that I smoke and have for a long time, my IQ is now a 142 and still going up. Messes with your brain....another brainwashed individual like the rest. They see a few posters and a few TV clips in school saying its bad and they believe it at face value with no facts or research on their own.

Oh now I'm laughing to hard.....a joint is 20 cigs? LOL oh thats a riot....try the opposite way around my dear.....20 cigs is equal to 1 joint. NOW you might have your facts straight. And this fact is for only the tar in cigs and pot....nothing more....ONLY the tar levels.

And what person sprays anything on their pot when it grows? Guess she is a pot growing expert to know this or is she just assuming this due to the fact we spray stuff on other growing plants. I am sure she is cause we DON'T spray anything on pot while growing. And since pot is a WEED, it has its own natural defenses against bugs and other insects so no bug spray is needed.

Come on you wise and smart people.....NEXT DUMB ANSWER?!?!?!

Without a doubt. No one governs the growing. The condition of the soil, the amount of mold on it,pesticides used, additional drugs sprayed on bad pot to make it sell, plus one joint is equal to 20 cigarettes for lung damage(if it is grown well)

Studies the government doesn't want you to know about show that smoking pot can actually reduce the incidence of cancers of many different types. Certain cannabinoids found in marijuana actually offer a protective effect against tumors and the proliferation of cancer cells.

Clinical trial data published in January 2003 issue of the Journal of the American Society of Clinical Investigation that found cannabinoids significantly inhibit skin tumor growth in mice. Investigators of the study concluded, "The present data indicate that local cannabinoids administration may constitute an alternative therapeutic approach for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer."

Clinical trial data published in the March 2003 issue of The FASEB Journal that found that the "local administration of a non-psychoactive cannabinoid inhibits angiogenesis (tissue growth) of malignant gliomas (brain tumors)."

A clinical review in the October 2003 issue of the prestigious journal Nature Reviews Cancer that concluded that cannabinoids’ "favorable drug safety profile" and proven ability to inhibit tumor growth make them desirable agents in the treatment of cancer. According to the review’s author, tumors inhibited by cannabinoids include: lung carcinoma, glioma, thyroid epithelioma, lymphoma/leukemia, skin carcinoma, uterus carcinoma, breast carcinoma, prostate carcinoma, and neuroblastoma (a malignant tumor originating in the autonomic nervous system or the adrenal medulla and occurring chiefly in infants and young children).

Clinical trial data published in the November 2003 issue of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics that found the administration of the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) inhibits the growth of human glioma cells both in vitro (e.g., a petri dish) and in animals in a dose-dependent manner. Investigators concluded, "Non-psychoactive CBD produce[s] a significant antitumor activity both in vitro and in vivo, thus suggesting a possible application of CBD as an antineoplastic agent (something which prevents the growth of malignant cells.)"

And finally, a clinical review in the December 2003 issue of the journal Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets that summarized "the demonstrated antitumor actions of cannabinoids," and elaborated on "possible avenues for the future development of cannabinoids as antitumor agents."

A study presented at a meeting of the American Thoracic Society on May 24, 2006, found that smoking marijuana, even heavily, does not increase the risk of cancer. The study was headed by Dr. Donald Tashkin of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Tashkin, who has studied the effects of marijuana on the lungs for years, had expected the study to reveal that heavy marijuana use results in elevated cancer risk.

Yep - it is the junk in normal cigarettes that causes cancer not the nicotine.

Pot has even more other junk especially as it is normally smoked unfiltered.

Smoking is smoking. You don't smoke canabis alone, you mix it with some sort of tobbacco, so yes, there is a danger of lung cancer.

Yes. Putting any hot, smoky particulate crap in your lungs can.
