It really depends on the difficulty of the extraction as to what and when you can eat foods. Most can add some solids the very next day even with sutures, with an air of caution to stick to the softer foods and nothing crunchy or hard for several weeks. The tissue is healing and you don't want to eat or do anything to traumatize the tissue during this time. Best to be safe for now and not take any chances. So start off with scrambled eggs, pasta, hearty soups and tender cuts of meats. Just avoid any food that require serious chewing untill you get the full function of your jaw again.

The soreness and cracking in your jaw is from being stretched open for the extractions and from the tooth itself being removed from the bone in that area. It's very common with the wisdom teeth removal, and yours are probably a little worse since it was impacted. We usually advise patients to start exercising their jaw the next day by opening and closing, (a little wider each time) several times a day. This helps the soreness in your TMJ area and keeps you from locking up where you can't open without muscle relaxers and moist heat therapy. We also recommend taking Advil or Motrin 600 mg along with your prescribed pain medication to help aleviate the soreness and reduce the inflammation. You can try applying hot moist compresses (damp towel heated in the microwave works great) if your having serious trouble opening your mouth. You're fine to use heat since your several days post op now. It may hurt a little initially to open, but the more you exercise the jaw, the better and faster you will regain the use of it.

So try the Motrin, hot moist compresses and exercise and you'll be your self in no time. Hope I've been of some help answering your questions, and so glad your procedure went well, your doing fine just start the exercising!

It is normal to not be able to open your mouth wide for a little less than a week after the procedure. The liquid diet was optional for me. The literature that I received after the procedure stated that the liquid diet is easy on the mouth and stomach since you may have had anesthesia and liquids usually do not cause nausea. Try to relax and eat, but call your dentist office about the clacking noise especially if it is also painful. If the pain is constant and/or sharp you may need to have a check up. Dull or moderate pain can usually be eased with acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

If you were advised to rinse with warm water and salt, please do so as often as you can per day. This helped me tremendously.

Best of luck to you in your recovery.

Getting an impacted tooth out is damaging to the surrounding tissues. You will be bruised and have trouble with opening you jaw for around 1 week to 2 weeks. Move your jaw gently, apply heat and that will help. Start eating soft foods after a couple of days. Wash out your mouth with salted water after you eat. It will get better, this is temporary.
Get well soon!
