I was in Afghanistan for the 2006 tax year and my pay was tax free. Do I need to file a return for Jan-Feb 2006, I was still in the states at that time, we deployed on Feb 23? Also, my last years return has an old address, I've moved. What can I do to get that refund re-routed? Can I put in a change of address and it be forwarded? Thank YOu

Yes, file. Your W-2 should show what pay is excludable due to being in Afghanistan. And thanks for being there for the rest of us.

If you put your new address on this year's return, your refund for this year will go there. If you still don't have last year's refund due to moving, contact the IRS.

There are special tax rules for Military Personell on active duty. Talk to someone familiar with those rules, or read about them in the 1040 instructions. You can change your address with the IRS by filing form 8822. You will also need to consider the state issues as well, many states also have special rules. You may also be able to exclude your income on form 2555. Do yourself a favor - seek some professional advice. The due date of your return is different if you're overseas, you may have to wait to file.... There is a whole host of specialized issues for a USS person working overseas.

Good luck and be safe!

I am pretty sure you have to file taxes, because your address is still listed as in the US, you don't get off tax free just because you are working in another country and they are tax free, especially if you are in the military. Also I believe you will likely have that money floating around as like unclaimed money, you will have to search for it, because I don't think the postal service or the IRS is allowed to forward tax returns, NO ADDRESS CORRECTION... is usually what that stuff is suggested, what I suggest is going to direct deposit, that way as long as you use the same bank you are good!

You really need to talk to someone at the Internal Revenue Service, Military deployment does get special handling, and they can advise what you need to do. They have a special group of people that handle nothing but questions in regards to Military pay in a combat zone
