The problem here is that the four bolts that hold it have a peculiar head. A 8mm ring spanner approxiamately fits it but not accurately enough.
Does anyone know what kind of head it is and where one gets the spanner to fit it.

you can get a set of torx sockets from halfords mate . a good buy even just to have in your tool box . if your doing the timing belt remember and spend that little bit more and do the water pump and the rollers because if that decides to go say ta ta to your valves . as this happened to me

Fortunately in the USA we have Snap-On tool trucks Yes the torx fasteners need special sockets to remove. There are several types of torx bolts some internal others external and Torx Plus and Type C Get the exact socket to avoid stripping off the crank bolts. And just when I get all the sizes in my tool box Nissan comes out with a five sided torx bolt. Some crank pulleys need special pullers to remove.

the heads you are talking about are called torxe drives, vauxhalls use a lot of these, if you do a lot of work on your own car it will be worth buying a good set, use the one that fits perfectly because if you round then of it creates bigger problems.
