The Japanese did not really fight for Singapore at all. They walked their way down through Malaysia with some resistance. The Australians did try... Basically the British were convinced (despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary) that the Japanese would attack by sea. Hence, they had their guns pointed in the wrong direction. The japanese landed in the North of Singapore with almost no ammunition left, (Big Balls however) they continued their march and the British surrendered at Bukit Timah. After that the japanese took over, to put it mildly, they were really nasty. I could fill 100 pages with the details, Try reading King Rat by James Clavell. Great story about what happened after the surrender.

The Japanese were interested in Singapore and even on Sri Lanka's Trinco harbour due to the importance of controlling the Naval powers in south Asia. Singapore harbour would have been a crucial asset for the Japanese Navy to control and monitor the fleet movement through out Asia.

The quiwst of the Empioror was to gain as many asian countries as possible. Containing the resources to continue the war effort. And of the strigic placement of these holdings meant more places to launch attacks from so they but before they could do any thing they had to dislodge the British troops in place . Japan disliked China but they were very rich in resources when they came into China they killed and maimed millions of people to drive home that they were superior and to put the fear into them. They did the same in Korea. Hate and resource gathering. Many have forgotten just how brutal these Japenese troops were at the behest of there commanders. Tojo and others were hanged as war criminals at the end of the war. We dont hang many commanders so they had to be pretty brutal in their advances. Our History books will tell the American version. Wonder what the Japans history books will say. Very interesting

The King of Japanese is greedy. He thinks that Japan is very small. So he wants to capture other countries. As the Japanese soldiers are very loyal to their king, they dare not disobey the king's order. Then from China all the way to Singapore, the Japanese soldiers are too strong. So Japanese fighting all the way to Singapore.

Two reasons.

Singapore is a strategically important harbor on the straights of Malacca. They were just as vital then as they are now.

Secondly, the only sizable British contingent in the Pacific was based out of Singapore.

So seizing it hindered British operations and gave them a port from which to operate.

It was all about controlling the sea. Singapore's harbor was a good place from where it could be done.
