Is there a charge to go to the top of the Empire State Building?

There is a charge for the ESB - a BIG charge - adult admission to the building and the 86th floor observatory is $18 - BUT, if you want to go to the 102nd floor observatory, that's an additional $15 - so admission to the 102nd floor observatory is $33 - if you want to hear the recorded tour information, that's $7 more. And you haven't even asked about the lines - not only the lines to buy the tickets (you can buy them online), but even if you already have your tickets, the lines waiting for the elevators are huge. I've lived here all my life and I have never been to the top of the ESB.

I recommend going to the Top of the Rock, the observatory at Rockefeller Center. The Observatory is on the 70th floor, the view is even better - a full 360 degrees - so close to Central Park. Admission to the observatory is $17.50 for an adult. They have specials - For $30 you get admission to the observatory and a pass to the Museum of Modern Art (great place - they show wonderful movies) or for $45 you get a pass to the observatory, a tour of the NBC studios and a tour of Radio City Music Hall. The audio tour, $10 additional, sounds interesting - you rent a handheld gpa - you can also rent one for a tour of New York - you take it with you and listen, etc. - expensive, but only one handheld can serve several people.
