Depends on the climatic conditions where you live. In India the normal intake of children would be around 1 to 2 litres a day and elders 3 to 4 litres a day which is normal.

A good rule of thumb is 6 to 8 glasses a day ( 8 oz glasses). More for an adult and a little less for a child. Water offers many health benefits. First, no calories, so it helps maintain our weight. It aids with the body's ability to burn fat and process food into waste and eliminate that waste. it also lubricates our joints and helps with our skin tone and appreance. Water is moisture. Our body is 70 % water...so yes, it is very important for us to get a substantial amount everyday.

It's actually more controversial than one might think - there's no scientifically proven amount that's ideal for children and adults. Most guidelines suggest the 6 / 8 rule, but it highly depends on conditions (temperature, activity level). Too much water is possible and can lead to hyponatremia / electrolyte imbalance. Not something to really worry about though. Dehydration is far more common.

I believe that there should be more emphasis on the quality of the water. I distill all my water for home use in order to remove the Fluorides, Chlorine, and other junk.
At the office, I drink Pellegrino. I drink whenever I am thirsty.

In addition, I was told by my doctor that you should drink an additional 8 ozs. of water for every 25 lbs. overweight you are. Drinking 8 glasses a day is what you need to sustain your body in its daily functions, but if your overweight you will need more.
