there were three brothers named Werner who originally came over to the US in about 1850. there was an extensive genealogy done and the spelling WERNER was the original. anyone wanting to spell their name even similar to this spelling had to get permission from this family at one time. sorry but the reason is unknown as I am related to the WERNER family through Frederick Werner.
