Poor you, I am sorry you have had depression for years. It is a horrible illness - I know as I have suffered with it myself.

In my experience, it is a combination of things that can make a difference - and it can take a while to find what works for you.

I would definitely recommend counselling. Also, I recommend exercise. I know that when you feel depressed the last thing you want to do is a work out - but it can really make a difference.

Structure can be very helpful - that's why it's good to join an exercise class, or swimming club, for example, that you go to at least once a week on a regular basis. Then when you have a time of depression, do everything you can to keep attending that regular class.

Structure works in other ways too - so eg, you could go for a walk each day, listen to the same radio station, etc. Music is great to keep you going.

Try saying affirmations - these are phrases that you write when you are feeling less depressed, which are very positive and phrased in the present tense. "Every day in every way I'm feeling better and better" is the classic one. You might not feel as if you are getting better, but your unconscious mind will hear what you're saying and it will make a difference. Affirmations can be said at least twice a day, say on waking and before sleeping, at least three times.

For more help with affirmations etc, try listening to CDs by Susan Jeffers, Louise Hay, Deepak Chopra, Glenn Harrold. (Available at libraries or to buy on Amazon.co.uk)

Depression is often supressed anger. It is important to express your feelings though, not just to do affirmations on their own. Ask your GP for coounselling (if in UK, it can be available on NHS) While you're waiting for the appointment, join an exercise class, and see if you can ask for extra support from family and friends. Hugs help!!

Every time you get through a bout of depression, you have achieved something. You will get through this as you build up a supportive structure to help you.

I hope this helps.

If your serious about this:
1. Don't drink or do drugs (enhances depression)
2. See a doctor (phys doctor) medication
a. If this has been going on for 'years' it sound chemical rather than just depression.
3. Could also be situational - If so get out of the situation.

I don't think you can get rid of it, you will prob always be prone to it, but as you know you have good days and bad days. There are steps you can take to reduce the number of bad days though.

Counsellor/psychologist?
Eat healthily - loads of books available on this, including some which tell you about foods to eat to combat deression.
Get outdoors more - an effort I know, but worth it (I need to do that more!)

I have been off anti-depressants for over 2.5 years now, but it hasn't been easy. Good luck with it! xxx

Hi, your best bet is to go and see a doctor as soon as possible so they can get the ball rolling for you and help you to get back on your feet and well again. I battled for going on 2 years and just kept telling myself to get it together and get happy, I didn't believe in taking medication as I thought it disguised the real me and masked my problems. However, I now realise that depression is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain and anti-depressants help to correct that. I started to see a counsellor also and this has helped greatly. Also, try and do things that you used to enjoy, you may feel like there is nothing you enjoy anymore but just think back and then take them up again. Most importantly though, talk to family and friends, tell them how you feel and let them help you to feel better again. Good luck and take care of yourself, believe me nothing is as bad as it seems.

Get to a mental health professional as soon as possible. Would you knowingly walk around with cancer for years ? Depression is a disease, not just a bad mood. Do not wait for it to go away on it's own. Your life is worth the effort it will take to get better. Good luck.

If you have a sympathetic GP go and see him, if you haven't find one. Ask to be referred to the Community Psychiatric Nurse for assessment. Pills help but you can't stay on them forever..... good luck x
