I was looking through the pets section in our local paper and came across a phenomenon I am curious about.
Mixed breed dogs, for all intents and purposes are mutts. So what makes some of them worth $300+? peekapoo's for example. Can't register them with the AKC, can't show them at AKC shows...they are essentially worthless except for a loving family pet...yet is that all that makes them worth 300(i've seen them for 650 or more also). granted you take two purebred parents to make the baby, but the baby is a mutt.
except for love of the dog, what makes it worth it?
just curious

i'm glad to see there are other reasonable people out there.
i can see charging for vet and shots, but for a "designer" dog(one made up mutt from two pure parents)...its pointless, except for the love of a pet

As you have pointed out a mixed breed is a mutt. Mutts make great pets. You can adopt a mutt from a shelter for a small fee. People that pay a lot for a mutt have way too much money. But hey, that's just my opinion.

A lot of the purebreds are becoming overbred and inbred. A mix like this can produce a healthier dog. A mixed dog isn't useless: sometimes you get a really neat dog by combining characteristics from one breed with another. Besides, only a small percentage of dogs are actually shown at AKC shows. Get a dog that makes you happy, no matter what the breed. I have had several dogs over the years and the mutts from the pound were always better behaved and had fewer health problems than the pure breeds from the breeders.

A "fixed" dog can't be shown anyway and it is just irresponsible to not spay or neuter your pet. Check out the sheer number of animals on petfinder.com before you decide you need to bring more puppies into the world.

Who was it who said "A fool and his money are soon parted."?

I have no problem with mixed breeds. But mixing a boxer and a lab, then trying to sell them for $400.00 as a "Bloxer" seems dishonest.

As some one above me has already said, if a person wants a mixed breed dog, humane societies and dog pounds are full of them. Some of them may need a good bath & some worm meds, but other than that, they are every bit as good a dog as a Bloxer or a labradoodle, only without the ridiculous title. (I especially hate to hear about "puggles".)

yup, it ridiculous what people are doing. sometime i wonder who would buy a mix for 450 or even a 100. but i think it all about consumer and demand. there a high demand for them, for some reason....?? i think people are tire of see the same type of dogs. i say if you want a mix dog, go to the pound/shelter, you pretty much get all the mix possible and your money worth.

because some people can get away with charging money for what they call designer dog. yes i agree that charging that much for a mixed breed is stupid. charging a small amout to cover the cost of the first vet visit is ok.
