If it's just one dog you are breeding, I really wouldn't rely on it for a steady income. If you are breeding for show quality, the dogs are worth more, but then that narrows the number of buyers who can afford a show dog.

Breeding is expensive.

You would have to become a BYB or a puppy mill. GSD are pretty common, so there is not much to be made on them. The ones that cost a lot are properly bred and have been shown and had health chacks. You are just talking about mass producing them for money. If you are to make money on breeding, it has to have little money put into it, so that means you are selling basically crap to pet people.
You would also need a LOT of dogs to be able to live off the breeding, and when things go wrong, like a litter dies, you are behind.
I would NOT think this is a good way to go. Breeding should not be a source of income. Good breeders have jobs to support the breeding. It is usually a money pit.

No there isn't. The only way people make any money breeding dogs is the puppy mills. If you are thinking about breeding German Shepherds, you need to get out in the show ring, obedience ring or Schutzhund field. You need to get the proper health screenings done on your breeding animals as well. In my kennel we always have a negative income on the dogs. The money going out for OFA's ect..., dog show entries, vet bill's, vaccine, medicines, and dog food is always more than money from pups. You need to have money in the bank in case of a c-section, maybe a bloat, ect... If you are a responsible breeder, there is no money in breeding any breed of dog.

NO! There is NOT!

If you act as a responsible breeder, you will hardly break EVEN after finding good homes for your pups. There's YEARLY health tests, check-ups for the mother, pup check-ups, possible C-sections, showing your dogs to be sure the hold to the standard, the food for the mother and pups . . .the list goes on and on, my friend.

If you're looking at this as a way to make money, do everyone and all the dogs out there a favor and DON'T. Breeding is expensive when done right!! We do NOT need another back yard breeder trying to make some cash off their pups!

it is very hard to make money breeding and selling dogs because so many thing can go wrong. german shephards can have hip problems and growth. there are shorts to be started and other things. the female could have more puppies than she can feed her self. then you have to feed the puppies your self. you need to talk to other G/S breeders before you start this.
