I've been through this situation myself.......
As with most things in life, honesty is the way forward to you. You just say exactly what you said in your question and qualify it by assuring him that you love him to bits. If he can't deal with this, then he isn't really looking after your welfare is he?

If he doesn't understand that you are busy, then he is very insecure or trying to be controlling or both. My nephew is off at college and his gf has to call him every night and chat. He is playing football and wants to be a doctor. His schedule is very demanding. I would think she would want him to have time to study so that he can work toward his degree. Those grades are so important to get into premed. No, she is too worried that he could be out having a good time and has to call and check. When he comes home, she demands all of his time. He finally told her to take a hike. I'm so glad he got rid of her. She just didn't care about his future and was so selfish. I know that he really cared for her but she just smothered him. Anyone that doesn't help you reach your goals really doesn't have your best interest at heart. Tell him the truth that you need the time. Suggest you cut your chat time each day or schedule it for certain days. If he doesn't go for it, what can he really say without trying to lay a guilt trip on you. Play it by ear. You're not telling him you don't want to talk to him, you're saying you need to get your work and study done.

Just tell him why you cannot find the time to chat every now and then as you are a busy woman and it is not through chatting that you can tell how much you love him, but it is through the respect he can direct to you so that you are able to concentrate with your work and studies.

Have a quiet time to talk to him, dont tell lies, he will understand that you are busy at work and study. you can just call him on phone almost everyday for him to know that since you cannot chat with him, you are always there for him

Well after you have a little romance with him in the night, tell him that my Boss saw me chatting on the net and is threatening to email me a warning letter if I continue doing this.
By the way, it could happen so beeee careful !
Have a nice day:)

Honestly, I am also the same type of person, you know, the kind who doesn't like to hurt other feelings.
Normally, in this kind of situation, you should tell him that youdidn't get good grades (or something like that) and that you have to spend more time on studying......
Hope it helps. Good luck!

then leave the net for some time. Or tell him directly. There's no harm in doing that.
