I'm very sorry to hear about his sad diagnosis. It's a tough disease to deal with, but there is help available. If he hasn't already been referred, he needs to be put in touch with a dietician, who will show you how to thicken his drinks and prepare his foods to avoid problems, as well as monitoring his ability to swallow. He also needs input from an occupational therapist and a speech and language therapist, who between them should be able to come up with a suitable way for him to communicate and maximise whatever function he has, as well as optimising his seating and positioning.
You should already be in touch with the Association - a valuable resource, but I'm attaching the links for the main home page and the branches in case you're not. Do get in touch with them - they can provide support and information for you and your family.
Good luck, it's not an easy road ahead.

I am sorry to hear about your father. I would recommend being referred to a speech language therapist for both the swallowing and the communication, as they are very knowledgeable in both these areas and have a lot to do with people who have MND. I once went to a study day on MND and there is a really good communication device available kind of like a talking computer (not sure what it is called sorry, but the SLT would advise you). I would also recommend - if you haven't done so already - getting an occupational therapy assessment. There are various aids and housing modifications which your father may benefit from. Even if he is still physically well it is best to get things in place for him before he will eventually need them. OT assessments and any subsequent housing alterations may take some time. Best of luck.

He probably wouldn't be able to get insurance and if he did I imagine it be phenomenally expensive and wouldn't cover any illness or treatment related to his condition . . . at least here in the UK he is covered for any care he needs. And can always choose to pay privately if he wants anything extra. And RayHere is talking boll0cks as usual. Hannan is just a rich snob who has no understanding of what life is like for people who don't earn six figure salaries. It took a REAL man, like Aneurin Bevan, who had worked his way up from the bottom and understood how life was for the less fortunate, to give us the NHS. I have no respect for Hannan, self serving little traitor that he is who sucks so much US-Republican d*ck his jaw must be aching. But Bevan is my all-time Welsh Hero!!!

it is not nice, I am sorry for you. By now you should be getting much attention from your GP and may think about the possibility of a PEG feeding tube - a small plastic tube that can introduce liquid food directly to the stomach. Perhaps the doctor should visit and explain and give your father time to consider it. I do wish you well, don't be afraid to speak up and ask for help if you haven't had much input from your GP surgery - they should be doing all they can to help you. lots of love and best wishes hon, email if you like
