Some people say that snipers are only doing the job because it is away from danger.
I think they are gifted hunters, who are needed in every war.
I would like proper answers instead of you people who take the moral highground and will say things like"war is bad", i know this, i just want an answer to the question, thank you.

did you know that a sniper(sharpshooter)called Major Ferguson(scottish)in the American civil war could have shot George Washington, but would not shoot a man in the back! How would that have changed history.

snipers are not cowards. they are highly trained professionals. if someone is a coward they could not sit still in the bush for up to days at a time waiting for thier target to appear with only a spotter next to them behind lines. i do not think a coward would be able to perform the task at hand. you should not confuse professionals with others you hear about in the news like our beltway "sniper" someone shooting civilians out of the back of a truck at 100 yards and just wounding people is not a sniper, i believe the proper word for it is criminal of terrorist. true snipers would work from extreme distance (at least 600 yards plus) to increase odds of exit without detection. and you would have one shot one kill only. to illustrate marine known distance qualification for service rifle has you shooting out to 500 meters (approx 550 yards) without rifle scopes and bipods for rifles.

Snipers are the furthest thing from Cowards. They are sitting ducks waiting for an opportunity that they have been trained for. Being a sniper is not only highly respected, but also extremely dangerous. Read the book "Shooter". It gives incredible insight of the world of the Marine Sniper.

Snipers are highly trained, skilled people who are at risk even from their location. They probably suffer as much or more stress than guys on the front lines because they are to protect the guys. The people who shoot at innocents while they hide are NOT snipers, they are cowards who like to kill, the D.C. "sniper" was not a sniper, he was a lucky shot who was a coward! I don't like giving the criminal act the name of highly trained men!

No, snipers ARE NOT cowards, when involved with the military or SWAT of course.

When I lived in California, there were random people getting shot as they drove down the freeway by "snipers," who sat waiting on overpasses, etc. Those people ARE cowards.

If it's a security job, then they aren't cowards. Compared to other jobs, including many in the military, sniper is actually pretty dangerous. Cowards need not apply.

But those criminal snipers are the first ones I thought about when you asked the question. I remember riding a car under fire once, and that idiot who tried to snipe us was definitely a coward.

You are being too kind in your description of snipers. The are people who love to kill, and are licensed to do so by the police depts., military, or the U.S. govt. It takes someone who like to kill to perform such a job, I'd say you may only have 2-5% of the world populations who can do this without any hesitation at all.

Snipers are a necessary tool in any military.

Snipers have the unique ability to kill opposing officers at long range. This can have a demoralizing effect on enemy forces and can cause troops to go to ground or panic and route.

Snipers are not cowards, just another form of military unit like a tank or helicopter gunship.

No snipers are the furthest thing from cowardly... I consider them intelligent hunters. They are often put in situations where they are vastly outnumbered. And if they are detected they are dead. It takes bravery to face an enemy who outnumbers and outguns you...
