There are about 6000 languages in the world, with about 1000 languages spoken on the island of New Guinea (half of New Guinea is the country of Papua New Guinea and the other half is part of Indonesia). There are about 2000 languages spoken in Africa, about 1000 languages spoken on islands in the rest of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, about 1000 languages spoken in the Americas (many are now extinct), and about 1000 languages spoken in Eurasia. Papua New Guinea and Indonesia are very close to each other in terms of which has the most languages spoken in it. They far outstrip any other country in the world in terms of number of languages.

Surprisingly, the most languages are found in Papua New Guinea. There are more than 700 languages found there. In the world I believe there is some where around 6000 languages. Remember, however, languages disappear all the time so it`s hard to say. Also, this is a hard number to determine definitively since that which differentiates, in most cases, dialects and languages is mearly it`s relationship to some kind of nationhood or official status. A perfect example might be Swedish and Norweigan which are probably more similar than, say, German spoken in Switzerland and German spoken in Germany. So the first question you asked is pretty tough to answer. Hope that information helps out. Good luck!

There are still approx. 6,000 living languages being spoken around the world.
The country which holds the record for the most languages is neither Nigeria nor India, but Papua New Guinea, where more than 700 languages are spoken.
