The term "Mafia" originated in Sicily and was applied to members of organized crime there. During the immigration in the early 1900's many of there members immigrated to the U.S. and they became the "Black Hand". As more and more Sicilian Mafia members arrived in New York they displaced all the Black Hand and Murder Incorporated members and Organized them into the Five Families of the Mafia. They still maintained there ties to the Sicilian Mafia.....Now adays the term "Mafia" is applied to any Organized Crime gang i.e. The "Russian Mafia", "Chinese Mafia", etc.
