I have never been bitten by a dog and i do voluntary work in the Dogs Trust, where i am around many different types of breeds of dogs and all from different backgrounds.
Many of these dogs are frightened of people and very wary of strangers.
The reason I haven't been bitten yet is because I won't approach a dog with a tendancy to show aggression towards strangers.
And I always look at the body language of the dog. Good signs usually are the tail in the air wagging. But you still can't take a chance. Luckily in the Dogs Trust they have signs next to the kennels telling you a bit about the dog. Bad signs are the dog will crouch down or cowar, then they will growl or show their teeth. At this point you would be best to walk away. Obviously if this was in the outside world you shouldn't approach a strange dog anyway.
You have to see it from the dogs point of view. If someone much taller and bigger leaned over you and attempted to touch you, how would you react? We must remember that a dog's only defence is its mouth.
There is a greyhound in the Dogs Trust where i work who is very wary of strangers and does not like being approached. I took my time to get him used to me, going near his kennel and talking to him but not touching him, and now he will take treats off me, and he does it in the most gentle way because he knows I am not there to harm him but to give him treats. I would never attempt to stroke him because i know without the treats he would definately bite me.
Always remember a dog's behaviour can be unpredictable, so don't take no chances unless you know the dog well.

I have been bitten 3 times by a dog.

When I was 7 my parents were visiting friends, and the dog bite my nose, missing my eye by 1//8th of an inch. I was sitting next to the owner and not bothering the dog. Since the owners would not prove that the dog did not have rabies I had to get shots. The dog was a cocker mix.

A couple years later, my own dog bite me after he returned home from straying off. He was a cocker mix.

My mother's boss' dog bite me when we went over to visit. It was a cocker spaniel.

None of the bites were provoked... owners were present at all times. However it was in the late 50's when cockers were being over breed.

However I will never own a cocker spaniel.

i have been bitten twice by a dog. The first time was when i was about 3 years old and put my face into the teeth of my grandparents border collie. I still have the scar under my right eye! Completely my fault.
The second time was about a year ago, and I was bitten on the arm by my friends cocker spaniel. The dog has a few anger management issues and objected to my trying to sit on the sofa!

I was bitten by a west highland terrier when i was 12 years old, I was walking home from school when the dog came running out of its garden and bit my ankle! ouch! The strange thing is, I used to walk past this house several times a day and the dog had never gone for me before so what made it attack that time I'll never know. After my parents had a word with the dogs owner the garden gate was always kept shut after and the dog was unable to get out and attack anybody else.

After owning a Pet Sitting business for almost 10 years, I have come across all types of dogs. The only dog that ever bite me was the one I own, a black lab. The only reason she bite me was because she wanted the food from my hand. She was only about 3 or 4 years old. She is now 14, and only nips at your butt when you go out without her. Fortunately it is on the meatiest part of your body, and never breaks through your skin. I also have a ROTTWEILER, never once bit me, or anyone else, and is the mother hen so to speak of all my other doggies. It doesn't matter what the breed is, all dogs have a tendency to bite, it depends on who or what provokes the bite.

I was bitten by an alsation. It was a dog which I knew. It's owner was eating a sandwich and I leant over to give him a peck on the cheek. The dog had been waiting for his titbit and I think he thought I was going to get it instead and went for me. Because I could work out the reason for the unusual aggression I forgave the dog, but my friend never gave the dog any titbits after that. I still have a slight scar, but no lasting damage, and I still love dogs

I have been around dogs my whole life..owned various breeds and even worked with agressive dogs, I haven't been bitten once, but i believe thats because i know HOW to handle and watch for specific behaviour. My mother was bitten once, but that was many years ago and the dog was just defending its territory

I was bitten by a German Sheppard when I was about 10. I was going door-to-door selling Girl Guide Cookies (or something of the like) when the person's dog started running at me. Fearful, I started to run...which isn't the best thing to do in that case but I didn't know better. I managed to bite me on the arm and scratch my leg before the owner got control of it.

The owner called my parents that day to offer to have the dog put down but my parents told them that they really didn't want to see the dog punished for defending its territory but that it had better be chained on it's run when outside...as there were a number of small kids on my road.

The worst thing about this whole scenerio...it happened on Friday the 13th:)

I was bitten by a Lab/Shepard mix and a Border Collie. The Lab/Shepard mix, Odin's sire (we knew both the sire and dam because they lived on our street, as did two or their pups including Odin) was actually a bit mentally unstable so we believe that's why he began biting people. All I was doing was riding my bike. As to the Collie, that was my fault. I work at the pound, and every once and a while we DO have to put a dog down. Aversion's number was up next. He knew where he was going, and he fought me every step of the way. I ended up trying to force him in the kennel which scared and threatened him, so he ended up biting me.
