I am hoping to emigrate to South Australia with my family on a general skilled visa and wondered how soon after being granted the visa do you have to take up residency and what sort of time frame do you have to work within. would we have to go as soon as the visa was granted, say within 3 months or would we have say 2 years before we decided to go. We are just about to have our medicals and police clearance as requested by the DIMA so we think it might not be that long !!!!!!!!!! Thankyou.

I've just obtained my Permanent Resident´s Visa but I haven't gone to Oz yet. I have to enter the country for the first time before September 13, 2007 which is exactly one year after my medicals were done. After that, you can go in and out of Australia whenever you want, but after five years you must have spent at least 731 days in there in order to get your visa renewed. By current regulations, after two years you may even apply for citizenship, although the Parliament wants to change that to four (I hope they don't pass that law yet!)

What would happen if we didn't relocate to Australia having been granted the visa. You must enter australia and stay there for the next 2 years - that is what you are applying for - PERMANENT RESIDENCY. Does this invalidate the visa and prevent a permanent one being issued in 2 years time. YES I am aware that you have to enter australia by the "specified initial entry date" on the visa, YES thats right but less clear on whether you are then expected to remain there for the duration. YES you are expected to remain there for 2 years. It is ONLY 2 years. You need to suck it up and dont be a wimp. You have email to stay in touch. Once you get your permanent residency then you can go home to visit.

I was granted permanent residency in Jan 2005 and I had to make my initial entry by Aug 2005 - after that I was allowed to come back to my country of origin. I have until 2010 to go and settle in australia. Not sure what happens if I dont go by then - am sure my visa will be revoked or something. I cant wait to go though - I think its a lovely country....

So to answer your question - you are given 6 months to make an initial entry (as the main applicant, without your family) and thereafter 5 years to migrate and settle.

Hope that helps.

Good luck.

I was told to have 12 months from the day, the visa was granted. But it is better to check with the authorities!

From the time you and your family complete your health and character examinations you will have 12 months to make your initial entry into Australia.

yep, third tuesday of the month between 10:34 and 11:22 in the morning. All other times will lead to immediate death penalty.

I always thought you had two years to emigrate. However, speak to whoever authorised your visa to confirm.
