Like for example they pay their cashiers proper wages and train them to be quicker, and make you buy carrier bags to encourage recycling and MOST importantly they don't blackmail suppliers into providing cheap produce that results in them going out of business.

I shop there a lot, and I have learned what I like, and what I do not. I like the cheap cream cheese, the corn and vegetable oil. Some of the frozen foods are great, I love the Mrs. Calenders-like pot pies. They come in a 4-pack, are a little smaller than the Mrs. brand, but they are a full meal for me .I do not like the fake brown sugar, and I wish they would stock diet-decaf cola. If they did, I would shop there more often. Their brand of Velveeta melts as well as the big name brand, and is a lot cheaper.
I usually pack my bags in the car, I bring my own. I see people grabbing empty packing boxes in the store, and I see people bringing in their own bags. I recycle my plastic bags, I just fold them up in my purse, and pull them out, when I pack inside when the weather is bad.
Good for Aldi, their methods keep prices down, and I do not mind bringing my own bags. I keep a quarter in my cup holder in my car, and put it back when I get it back when I take the cart back, that way I do not have to dig for one when I go.

Lidl is very similar. No frills, no gimmicks just plain ol' good food from the continent. Very good, and yes, they make you buy carrier bags so that's a good point. Checkout is much quicker than using the barcode method. Somehow I get the impression that it is an 'embarrassement' to shop at Aldi or Lidl so there's never a big crowd in there, which is an added bonus to me. There are products that I can't buy in these supermarkets so I do go to Tescos too but most of our shopping is from Lidl or Aldi.

I like Aldi I'm lucky i can easily get to a few stores
Some of their stuff is lovely
The shops are looking much lighter and more pleasant for the customer
The only draw back as far as I'm concerned They rush you through the checkout and when i am with my mother trying to get two trolleys through the checkout it is a nightmare it puts me off a bit

My parents (being OAPs) love Aldi and have long tried to convert me. On the few occasions I've been in there, I've been suprised by the variety of the produce, the price and the helpfulness of the staff there. I shall be going back.

Maybe they do, Aldi always looks like the bottom end of the supermarket chains to me. Maybe they need to publicise thier actions a bit better.

Thier staff certainly didn't behave like they were working in a better company ( the one time i went in there )

Its true that supermarkets screw our farmers - buyers for Tesco and Sainsbury's being the worst.

I love Aldi, inexpensive and decent quality. Here in the US I also love their sister company, Trader Joes.

I don't know about their business practices, but I have been very impressed by their checkout staff, who seem to be able to enter the prices manually for whatever you buy more quickly than the staff in the "big 4" can using their barcode readers!

I like Aldi.I bought a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel for £1.29.I don't think I'd get one as nice anywhere else for that price. Also their Christmas cakes were as good as any from the top 4 supermarkets.

Aldi is the biggest supermarket chain in Germany, I don't see charging for carrier bags as "ethical" it's robbery! and how do YOU know if they pressurise company's to get better prices? a lot of what they sell are "own brands" so little choice there! Still it's "cheap and cheerful" and frequented by, the underclasses 'cos it's cheap, and also by the well off, as they love a bargain! I only go there for their Gherkins! (Corniichon)
