One, remember that there is no shortcut to learning, but there are ways to make it easier on you IF and only IF you follow them.
To memorize there are two ways I recommend.
The Most important thing is to do it in small segments. For instance, say you have ten lines to learn. Take the first line and go over it two or three times. Come back an hour later and re-learn it, and add on the next line. But be working on it in small time sections (ten or fifteen minutes) at least three times a day.
Like as soon as you wake up (have it on a card with you all the time); on the schoolbus on the way to school; during study hall; before supper; and before you go to bed.
I often start by learning the first line or two. And then move to the end and learn that. Then I fill in.
I also find it helps to write out what I am studying as I memorize it. Writing the lines and repeating them out loud.
Another approach is to have the lines on cards and to go for a walk and work on it while walking (peripatetically) for a half hour or so.
For reading--if it's not memorizing you need, but just the flow of the story, and the characters, then write out a list of questions you need to know and work through them as you read. Sparknotes might help, too.
Good luck.

depends on how your mind works. If you are a visual learner, writing the information is good-but its even better to use colored markers for key or related information.
If you are an auditory learner like me, making up a song about the facts and singing or chanting it works like a charm.
If you are a kinescetic learner, acting out things with motions will help.
I taught learning disabilities as a substitute for one semester and used these methods to help high schoolers-and every kid's grades improved.
You can combine the methods-I often memorize things by chanting the facts while walking. Some of the kids made colorful charts while saying the facts out loud. And everyone loved it when we made a skit about walking through the tundra when learning vocabulary dealing with Russia

Memory by association. Associate the word with an object or another word. Try it and I promise you it works.
