They're man-made phenomena -- circles or shapes carved out in a field or on a farm. Often attributed to the work of aliens (who actually have much, much more important stuff to do).

No one knows. Two individuals in the UK admitted to making them when there was a big outbreak of crop circle phenomena in the 1990s. As a result of that no reputable scientists were prepared to admit they were investigating them. However, the first recorded crop circle was by a scientist/farmer in the 1890s (19th century - not a typo). There is some thought that the circular form is caused by micro climates - swirls of wind - but that doesn't account for some of the weird shapes seen.
