ok to the very few who defend pitbulls.why are they a banned dog in so many countries i dont see poodles or other small dogs being banned all dogs can bite and if provoked can attack people but a pitbull wont stop until a person is dead or anothor animal is killed there is always going to be a big debate on this but the facts still stand the dog is banned in parts of the world and in the uk the cost of owning one is prison in some cases that 5 year old girl who lost her life because her uncle was keeping a banned dog did not deserve to die

I have to agree with the ban because they are allowed in our community with the ability to cause death. It is called a lock jaw. To me it is the same as allowing an alligator to walk up beside you. All dogs can bite but a dog that can kill is diffrent. your getting a lot of flack on that but I agree.

ALL dogs are dangerous if they are owned by people that do not know how to care for and handle them properly. Yes and all dogs DO bite and this is not a stupid answer. Are you saying for an example that you would quite happily leave a West Highland Terrier alone in a room with a child because you have never known them savage someone to death? Oh and i used to own a Staffie cross Pit that i had for 13 years, never once did he snarl or bite another dog or human. I also used to own a Miniture Poodle at the same time as the Staff, he doted on that Poodle!

I like Pit Bull Terriers, I do belive that they need a good owner who is willing to train them right. the same with all dogs, every single dog in the country is capable of doing alot of harm, but if they are brought up right they should turn out to be good well adjusted animals.
The problem with alot of owners of dogs like these is they have the dog as a status symbol not a pet.
All dogs have the "killer instinct" as you call it, thats why our ansestors domesticated them in the first place, to protect the tribe and to assist in the hunt, with out that "killer instict" why would they have been domesticated. Every animal has this instict, it's just how were brought up to understand what to do. You talk about the 5yr old, and I really feel for that family, no one should loose a child like that, but we don't know all the facts and probably never will, but it's always blame the dog, what about the owner, what was going on in the house at the time, there are so many questions to be asked that can't be answered.
And to your point of a spaniel or westhighland terrier savaging someone, yes they are capable of doing it. they have teeth that can quite easily break the skin there for they can "savage" someone.
I have run a boarding kennels in the past and I have looked after a number of breeds ranging from the biggest to the smallest, the only time I got bitten in 4yrs was by a yorkshire terrier.
I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, were human we are all intitled to believe and think what we like, but would you condem an intire race of people just because one of them has killed?

Saying they are all killers from birth makes you sound like a moron. They are basically slightly bigger versions of staffies which are known as superb family dogs.Like staffies they were bred for dog fighting and so therefore it is natural for them to bite and not let go when they feel the need.Any dog can be provoked into biting but the best way to get a well trained pitbull to bite is to attack it's owner.
The big problem is idiot chavs buy them and train them to be psycho's and use them for dog fighting and as status symbols. They breed the 2 most psychotic they can find and sell the puppies for large sums but contrary to what they-and you-think nasty parents doesn't automatically mean nasty puppies.
Banning the breed has changed nothing they are still sold in the UK as 'American Staffordshires' and crosses between them and staffies are even more commonplace.
My friend had 1 when we were kids and he was lovely and never hurt a fly because he was trained properly. It's all down to training.I would bet the ones who've attacked kids recently were all trained to be guards-in other words programmed to be aggressive and intolerant. For example the uncle of the little girl was a druggie chav who's dog was 1 of the ones i mention above-taught to be fierce so he could show it off to his druggie friends.

Pit Bulls were bred to fight other dogs, NOT humans.
The media is great at telling everyone the bad side of any bull breed. But they don't tell you about the Thousands of Pit Bulls that live in family homes with kids. Most Pit Bulls never attack a human, But you won't read about them in a newspaper because it's not news.
Pit Bulls have been banned in the UK since 1991, The Dog's that have been in the news for bitting are probably badly bred, badly trained crossbreeds.
It's the numptys that own them that are the problem. Dog attacks no matter what breed are usually down to human error.

why ask other peoples opinions about something and then jump down their throats when its something you don't want to hear about?

you make no sense comparing a west highland white with a pit bull. if you want to make a point then compare a pit bull with a rottweiler or a mastiff not some little foo foo lap dog

pit bulls have bad reps because shallow minded people like you only hear what the media tells them instead of you going out to a positive setting that pit bulls would be in such as dog shows, obedience trials, agility competitions, etc.

if pit bulls were bred to be killers and have the instinct of killers why would people use the breed to make a hit television show that involved nothing but little kids (our gang/ the little rascals).
there was a pit bull named stubby that was a WWI hero. Helen Keller even owned a pit bull

but please before you go and ask someone a question, be more open minded and don't attack the person who answered because you don't like what they say. if you have your mind set that pit bulls are "evil" then keep it to yourself. not everyone agrees with you. get over it.

and if we have to exterminate a breed of dog because it is too "viscious" then why not start to kill off all things that are "evil" or viscious. im talking people too. we say its inhumane to take the life of a person even if that person took the life of another, but you want to destroy an animal who isnt smart enough to rationalize what they are doing. remember these ARE animals not something that will stop and think of what they are doing before they do it.

kinda funny...If you happen to be in Central CA, the shelters are full of them, crappy people get them because they think they are going to get a "mean" "fighting dog" and then once they realize that the majority of them are not like that they let them loose on the streets to be picked up by animal control. I actually adopted one of these beautiful creatures shortly after I got married almost 8 years ago and my hubby and I almost split because of it...he was misinformed and brainwashed about pittbulls like most of the population.
Well almost 8 years and 3 children later, we still have our beloved Katie the family dog. Even though I completely trust her (she got between my kids and a man who she thought was going to take them-he was trespassing on our property), I still only have her around them when I am present. I also have a pug and the rules are the same for her too. Dogs like any animal can be provoked by a tail pulling or any other form of harassment and strike at any given time. I think caution should be exercised with any dog large or small when it comes to children.
More kids are kidnapped/raped/murdered by people than attacked by dogs but funny how we don't "put to sleep" or "ban" those people from coming back into society (ok, maybe a handful of them but I have a handfull of them living in my small town walking free.) Responsible ownership and supervision is the key to raising a good pittbull.

when you ask such a stupid question all because these dogs are killing children that is all down to the owners at the end of the day i blame the child's parents relay they should never of left that child alone with a dog i don't care what sort of dog it is why do people keep on about pit bull who gives a **** i wouldn't have one around my kids but at the end of the day any dog can turn on a child don't care what they are but these dogs are not trained rite it down to the owners at the end of the day its the way they train there dogs to fight then that is all the dog knows i think that its the owners that should be put down not the dog they only do what they have been trained to do its like a child if they are allowed to miss behave that that is what they do its what the parents allow them to do so there again you cant blame the kid can you same with the pit bull its not there fault it is all they know so dont leave them around kids if you new that your neighbour abused kids would you leave your child with him no of cause you wouldnt so dont leave young kids alone with dogs that are trained to kill

Pit bulls are great dogs, when owned by good people. I have known hundreds that were perfectly well behaved. Its stupid people who dont train their dogs to behave correctly and the media who portrays them as the only dogs who ever bite. There are thousands of bite wound reports each year, yet only the few with pit bulls ever make news. Although last week a little girl was killed here (US) by her familys labrador retriever, and last summer a 6 month old baby was killed by its familys minature poodle. In the clinic I have worked in, there have been 14 "major" bite wound incidents over the past 5 years, not a single one by a pit bull (even though we are near an urban area with a population of them). Know what they were? 7 were Chihuahuas, 2 cocker spaniels , 2 labs, 2 shih tzus, and 1 westie. So much for your theory about little dogs...

but thats the thing here her uncle was an irrisponsible drug dealer that wanted his dog to be meaner than anyone elses, obviously this particular dog was not trained properly,he was not socialised properly,it was the owners fault, that the animal was the way he was,I run an obedience club, and have seen several smaller breeds try to challenge/attack people and dogs alike, and a lot of the owners, like yourself all say the the same thing,"oh they were bred to be pets,he does'nt mean it,oh he's only playing,he's frightened,"well they as the owner allowed them to behave this way,not everyone wants a dog with long hair that most owners cannot groom so end up having them clipped, some people prefer a dog that can go for long walks, that do not need to be carried, groomed tons, clipped tons, and yes, I too have heard of smaller breeds attacking and killing, but of course because of their size/breed it is not news worthy, they are not all perfectly behaved, once again down to owners,a dog of the kind you mentioned above, are very easy to train, they get bored easily because people do not work excess energy off, these dogs need something to do,ie,obedience, agility etc,
ask how many groomers have been attacked by a pit, compared to say, something like a **** tzu,
Wendy

The most kindest dogs can be trained to be violent towards people and other things. They can only be dangerous if they have been trained to be that way. I think it was horrible what happened to the young girl and is a good thing they are banned but the owners really have to train the dogs properly.
