The child has to have been born on or before December 31st, 2006 in order to claim them on your 2006 tax return. If this is the case, you certainly should have gotten the SSN by now. It is best to have it when claiming your child on your tax return....but if you don't, enter "Applied for" under the SSN and mail in your return (you won't be able to efile). Always use your current address...ignore what is on your tax forms. If you were unmarried as of December 31st, 2006 AND you paid for over 1/2 of the costs to keep up a home for at least 6 months last year for you and your dependent child, you can file as Head of Household. If you child was born last year, the "1/2 year with child" changes to "while your child was alive". You still need to keep up a home for 1/2 of a year. Example:

Let's say your parents pay for over 1/2 of the costs to keep up their home and...

1) you lived with them until August when you moved into your own place (with your girl) where you paid for over 1/2 of the costs and your child was born in December: you will file as Single

2) same as (1) except you moved out in June: you will file as Head of Household

Either way, you could claim your child. Try to get that SSN first. Most people get it while still in the hospital...not sure what is taking so long.

What does it mean "my address is still listed as my old address"? If you have established your own home, you would be paying rent or utilities and your name would be on those bills.

In order to file as head of household, you have to be paying over half of the bills of maintaining your home. In addition, you have to have a qualifying child in your home.

If this is true, then you can claim the child and file as head of household with the child as your qualifying child. You must have the child's Social Security number to file.

Wait until you get the child's SSN to file, even if you have to file an extension.

You can claim your child as long as she was born in 2006 or earlier, lived in your home for more than half the year (count time before her birth as being in your home) and you provide more than half of her support and her mother does not claim her.

You MUST have a SSN for all dependents claimed on your return. If you haven't got her SSN yet, apply for it immediately; you can't file your return without it.

Use your current address on your return; it doesn't have to match the addresses on your W2s.

It sounds like you meet the criteria for Head of Household but you haven't provided enough information to say absolutely for sure. Get a copy of IRS Pub 501 at the IRS website http://www.irs.gov , it has all of the requirements spelled out.
