Because they both make way too many profits for way too many people. And the people NOT making profits off of them are addicted. It's a lose-lose situation.

The reason is that there are so many people now that do smoke and you need to realize if they ban the ciggerettes then there will be a lot mean people. People that are now addicted to them can have the just taken away. We all know that it hurts people but you have a choice to smoke and not to smoke. People are just trying to make money to. Alcohol is different as well. It is almost the same way. Alcoholics will be torture. Almost going through there own rehab and having a relapse and not being able to get a fix. People that smoke and drink know that it is hurting them but it is just a bad habit that is hard to kick. Just like nail biting and tapping of the foot. Just think about how you would feel if they did ban them and then you always had someone yelling at you. Smokers that don't get a cigerette are mean and the same with a drinker. Good question!

Cigarettes and alcohol, though everyone knows that they are dangerous for one's health, are still being sold in markets all over the world because the people who have the power and control to ban them are addicted to these vices as well.

Well, actually alcohol can be good for you in small quantities so I think that the emphasis should be on drinking responsibly, rather than just banning it straight out. As for ciggys, there are no known advantages but try telling someone who is already hooked that smoking is now banned! That would be a bit harsh. What most countries are doing now is to raise the prices and make smoking in public more difficult... in that way it will hopefully gradually die out.

Because how would the government make money.
Those things do not make people sick, they are sick because they do not drink enough water. Read the book, you;re not sick, you're thirsty. I have been smoking and drinking now for 32 years. I also drink 2-3 gallons of water per day. Cancer and other ailments do not like an oxygen rich environment, If we clean the outside, how come we forget about the inside? From the cleanest colon in town. Remember everything in moderation, nothing in excess.

This would interfere with people's free will and lead to an uproar in organized crime. Just like the mobsters in the early 20th century during the alchohal ban, people would band together and peddle these substances underground.

More people consumed alcohol in the USA during prohibition than before, it also promoted organized crime to the position it now holds

Those industries have enormous and well-funded lobbies.
Same reason we're not all driving electric or natural-gas powered automobiles.
