You NEED to talk to YOUR case worker as he/she will know YOUR specifics
and nation of origin etc which MAY affect the answer. they're VERY helpful IF
you can finally get to see one. Better, tele or write.

In general, yes, you CAN get a work permit card and SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED ONE ALREADY!!!! You must NOT BE AN APPLICANT FOR
CITIZENSHIP -- which is critical to your question. At 6 years, you should be about ready for or have already taken the citizenship tests.

Just make an appointment at the nearest immigration office AND EXPECT IT TO TAKE HOURS ON END. Ask student friends who have more recently dealt with the office nearest you. Also, you should have information to go on line to
review your personal case history or LIKELY you've somehow been remiss in
doing anything more than get your student visa.

It's like taking a lab [small number of hours, BUT] you have to DO THE WORK

You can change your status. But which status do you want now?. You can get a worker visa if a company sponsors you. Or you can get a permanent residency, she will need to apply for you. This take years because a permanent resident's husband or wife has to wait a long time in order to get a visa number and start the process. I think it can take you 4 years or more to START the process of your residency. I do not know if in the meantime you can get a work permit ( valid for 12 months).
Now, she will have to show that she can sponsor you and you two can live above the poverty level for a household of 2 ( assuming that you do not have kids or any other dependents).
that amount increases with the number of dependents that you add.
You must be rich if you have been 6 years with an F-1 and in legal status ( not working outside the campus). So you may let her work for 5 years till you get your residency. How did you do it?

F-1's are only valid for duration of studies, 6 yrs, what are you studying? Your wife can petiton for you but you are looking at 5-7 year wait, depending on country of origin, and you can not get a work permit while you are on the wait list.
